Butler deals Camels first PFL loss 37-23

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Butler forced three Campbell turnovers and Sam Schrader accounted for three touchdowns, handing the Camels their first loss in Pioneer Football League play this season, 37-23 at the Sellick Bowl.

Butler (5-3, 3-2 PFL) posted 431 yards of total offense to top the previously unbeaten Camels (5-3, 4-1 PFL), who allowed season highs in yards and points.

The Bulldogs owned a vast 41:49 to 18:11 advantage in time of possession, running 85 plays to Campbell's 50.

Schrader finished with two touchdowns rushing and another through the air, running for 94 yards on 18 carries. Will Marty completed 20-of-32 passes for 191 yards and a score, adding a TD on the ground. Nick Weaver caught six passes for 46 yards, while Pace Temple added 71 yards on four catches.

Aaron Blockmon paced Campbell with 128 yards receiving with a touchdown on seven catches, notching his ninth career 100 yard performance. Daniel Smith passed for 321 yards, a season-best for the redshirt freshman, completing 25-of-33 passes with two touchdowns and an interception.

Isaak Newhouse picked off a pass, recovered a fumble and recorded eight tackles for the Bulldogs.

Scott Miller led the Campbell defense with a game-high 11 tackles, including 1.5 stops for loss.

Butler scored twice in the final 1:20 of the first half to take a 20-7 lead into the break. Sam Schrader's 21 yard run capped a 12 play, 75 yard drive with 1:20 to go.

A Campbell fumble gave Butler the ball on the CU 43 with 45 seconds to go, and Drew Bevelhimer converted a 20 yard field goal as time expired to give the Bulldogs the 20-7 halftime lead. The field goal was the second of the half for Bevelhimer, who made a 21-yarder on Butler's opening drive.

Campbell forced a Butler three and out to open the second half, and Mitchell Brown converted a 32 yard field goal to bring CU within 20-10.

Marty answered for the Bulldogs with a nine yard touchdown, and Campbell followed with a score, with Smith completing a 25 yard touchdown pass to Bryan Bailey to make it 27-17 Butler at the 3:44 mark of the third.

After Schrader's second TD run of the day with 11:16 to go in the fourth restored the BU lead, the Bulldogs recovered a Campbell fumble on the ensuing kickoff and tacked on Bevilhimer's third field goal of the afternoon to go up 37-17.

Butler held Campbell under 50 yards rushing for just the second time since 2012 (10/13/12 at San Diego, 21 yards; 11/19/16 vs. San Diego, 47 yards).

Campbell comes back to Buies Creek, hosting Jacksonville for homecoming on October 28. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
