HIGH POINT, N.C. --- Allena Heath tallied 17 kills and
Kayla Schanback recorded 22 digs, but Campbell suffered a 3-0 setback at High Point Friday night in Big South Conference volleyball action. It was the Camels' first loss in the last seven matches.
Heath recorded her 21st double-figure kill effort of the season for CU (16-9, 6-5 BSC). Schanback surpassed the 20-dig plateau for the fourth time this season.
Jessica Stocking and
Hannah Schneggenburger tallied eight kills apiece, while Stocking added nine digs and three blocks.
Summer Schuitema dished out 31 assists while
Alysha Mitchell had a pair of kills and three blocks.
A 3-0 spurt, which included a kill and a block from Mitchell, drew the Camels within 10-9 of the Panther lead in the first set. A kill from Schneggenburger tied the set at 12-12, but a 4-1 run for HPU made it an 18-15 advantage later in the frame.
The Panthers (19-6, 12-0) led by as many as 22-17 before taking the set by five. HPU scored nine of the final 13 points to close out the opening set.
The Camels took their first lead of the match at 4-3 in the second set off a kill from Mitchell. Campbell increased the advantage to 10-7, but the Panthers responded with a 6-0 spurt to take a 13-10 lead.
HPU took a double-digit advantage at 22-12, but a 5-1 Camel run drew CU back within 23-18 of the lead. The Panthers took set point off a Haley Barnes kill and finished the frame off a Kill from Ali Thanhauser.
High Point raced out to an 8-1 lead in the third set, and it was still a seven-point advantage before the Camels scored four-straight to cut the deficit to 12-9. A kill from Heath drew CU within 15-11 of the lead a few rallies later.
Campbell scored four-straight points to trim the HPU advantage to 17-15. Back-to-back kills from Heath helped CU keep the deficit at two (19-17), but the Panthers closed out the match on a 6-1 run to complete the sweep.
Molly Livingston had a team-high nine kills for High Point, who remained undefeated in league play and stayed atop the Big South standings. Abby Bottomley, the conference's dig leader, dug-up 15 balls while Jenna Smith dished out 19 assists.
The Camels held a narrow 39-38 advantage in kills, but was held to just .162 hitting. CU also finished with a 52-46 advantage in digs, while the Panthers led the way in blocks (8-6).
Campbell will face a quick turnaround and head to Lynchburg, Va. to face Liberty tomorrow at 2 p.m.
