Heath and Stocking lead Camels to 3-1 win at CSU

Both attackers record double-doubles in the Camels' Big South road win

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Allena Heath and Jessica Stocking each tallied double-doubles to lead Campbell to a 3-1 victory at Charleston Southern Tuesday night in Big South Conference volleyball action.

Heath put down a match-high 15 kills and added a match-high 17 digs. Stocking finished with 14 kills and had 15 digs. Summer Schuitema dished out a match-high 43 assists.

"We played well for the most part from start to finish," said Campbell head coach Greg Goral. "We controlled the tempo of the match with some quality serving and passing. We also executed very well out of serve receive and defended a tough Charleston Southern team well.

"We were able to get a balanced offense throughout the evening. All of our attackers hit over .200, which was nice to see. I'm looking forward to seeing how we play the rest of this week."

After taking a 2-1 lead in the match, the Camels (11-8, 1-4 BSC) used a quick 3-0 spurt to take a 15-9 advantage in the fourth set and forced the Buccaneers (7-12, 2-3) to call a timeout. A service ace from Madison Martin would later draw CSU within 16-12 of the lead.

Campbell answered with a 4-1 run to take a 20-13 advantage. The Bucs were only able to pull back within 21-16 of the lead before three-straight Camel points earned match-point at 24-16. CSU fought it away twice, but a final kill from Madison Linxwiler wrapped-up CU's Big South road victory.

Linxwiler and Hannah Schneggenburger each tallied eight kills apiece and combined for five blocks. Kayla Schanback finished with 13 digs while Alysha Mitchell put down a career-high five kills.

With the match tied 1-1, the score was knotted up at 17-17 in the crucial third set after back-to-back points from CSU following a timeout. Campbell answered with a 5-0 run to take a 22-17 advantage.

The Bucs broke the run with a kill from Brooke Monssen. However, Monssen committed a service error and a Stocking kill followed. A Buc attack error gave the Camels the seven-point third set win.

Kalysha Bates recorded a team-high 14 kills for CSU while Monssen had eight. Madison Martin led the Buccaneer defensive unit with 16 digs and Skyler Blackmon added 12. Rachel Smith dished out 35 assists.

The Camels rebounded from an early 7-0 run from CSU and used a 3-0 spurt to tie the first set 13-13. The score was still tied at 19-19 when a kill from Schuitema kicked off a 4-0 Camel run to make it 23-19.

Heath gave Campbell set point at 24-20 with a kill before a service error for Schanback made it 24-21. However, Schuitema would dump the ball over for another kill to give CU the first set victory.

The Camels return to action Friday when they open a three-match homestand against Liberty. First serve from Gore Arena is set for 7 p.m.
