Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

CU wins its third straight on Saturday

ROCK HILL, S.C. JJ Donnelly tallied a pair of goals to lead Campbell over Winthrop, 2-1, Saturday evening inside Eagle Stadium.

With the win, Campbell has won three in a row and improves to 7-4-1 overall and 3-1 in Big South play. Winthrop, which has lost five of its last six, falls to 3-7-1 overall and 1-2 in league play.

"It's extremely hard to win on the road, so we feel very fortunate to come away with three points tonight," said head coach Dustin Fonder.

Fonder continued, "I thought the guys had heavy legs from a long work week, but they dug in and did what they needed to do to get a result tonight."

Tonight's win was Fonder's 100th career victory as a head coach.

Donnelly's two goals brings his season total to eight, which places him fourth in the Big South. Max Hasenstab scored the lone goal for Winthrop and now sits fifth in the league with seven goals.

The junior from London, England, gave Campbell the a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the contest. Ian Rees fed a pass through to Donnelly, who took one touch and finished his shot to the left side of goal from just inside the box.

The Eagles equalized in the 20th minute by way of Hasenstab. After an unsuccessful clear attempt, Nil Vinyals found Hasenstab at the top of the box, where he finessed a shot to the right side goal to even the score.

Donnelly buried his second goal of the game six minutes later. Josh Hughes was able to carry possession down the right flank, where he found Humberto Chavez in the middle of the field.

Chavez played a through ball in between a trio of defenders that found Donnelly near the penalty spot for a one-touch finish over the head Winthrop goalkeeper Kenneth Perkinson.

"I think our group grew up a lot tonight because we learned how to grind out a result," stated Fonder. "Tonight we learned that our group is a good team, because good teams win and figure out a way to get a result when they don't play their best."

Neither team found the back of the net in the second half, despite combining for 11 shots in the frame. Overall, Campbell out shot Winthrop, 15-11, including a 7-5 edge on frame.

The Camels registered only two shots on frame in the second half, both within 24 seconds of play in the 49th minute.

Alemu Mercer-Miko's attempt forced Perkinson to make a diving save. Soon thereafter, Josh Signey took a shot from distance that was tipped over the bar by the Eagle goalkeeper.

Winthrop's lone shot on goal in the second half came in the 69th minute when Nil Vinyals' shot called for a diving save by senior goalkeeper Matthew Mozynski.

Mozynski held strong in frame, facing six shots and stopping five of them. Perkinson faced six shots and stopped four in the loss.

Up next, Campbell returns home on Wednesday for a match up against Georgia Southern at 3 p.m. at the Eakes Athletics Complex.
