BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Chris Clemons scored 27 points in only 20 minutes and Campbell rolled to a 108-44 win over Columbia International Monday night at Gore Arena.
Clemons had 20 points in the opening half for the Camels, who led by 27 at the break, and produced the largest win margin (64 points) in Gore Arena history.
Junior
Jon Ander Cuadra added a career-high 14 points on 4-of-4 shooting, including 3-of-3 beyond the arc, and all 14 Camels scored. Campbell shot 60.9 percent from the field – 65.6 percent in the second half – and outscored the visitors 59-22 after intermission.
Campbell (1-1) jumped to a 20-point lead in the first 10:13 and never trailed against the Rams (1-4). CU forced 22 Columbia International turnovers and converted those into 33 points. The Camels outscored the non-Division I Rams by a 52-18 margin in the paint and held a 20-6 edge in fast-break points.
A junior guard from Raleigh, Clemons became the fastest player in CU history to reach the 1,500 point plateau and moved into 11th place on Campbell's all-time scoring list, 5th in the Division I era (since '77-78) with 1,526 points.
Clemons followed Friday's season-opening 39-point effort with his 41st 20-plus point outing in just 68 games. On Monday night, he made 10-of-15 shots, 4-of-8 from 3-point range, dealt 5 assists and had 2 steals in only 20 minutes.
Freshman
Brooks Cluxton came off the bench to grab a game-high 10 rebounds in 19 minutes.
Cory Gensler,
Jordan Whitfield and
Mogga Lado added 8 points apiece for CU.
Campbell knocked down 13-of-32 three-pointers and had 25 assists to just 10 turnovers. CIU, a member of the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association, made only 1-of-10 from 3-point range.
Druw Rollins came off the bench to lead Columbia International (1-4) with 13 points, while Micah Banks added 12. The Rams shot just 35 percent from the field.
Campbell returns to action Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. start at UNC Wilmington.
