BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jaren Lewis scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Jalone Friday came off the bench to add 14 points – including the decisive three – as Abilene Christian defeated Campbell 85-80 in overtime in the first game of the Creek Classic at Gore Arena.
The Wildcats (3-2) led by 13 (50-37) with 18:59 to play only to see Campbell (2-3) reel off a 20-4 run and ultimately forcing overtime.
After
Marcus Burk's three from the top of the key tied the game at 70 with 2.7 seconds left in regulation, Abilene Christian made 5-of-7 shots in the extra period.
Chris Clemons hit a pair of free throws to give Campbell a 79-78 lead with 27 seconds to go, but Friday answered with a wing three to put ACU in front 81-79 with 12.9 seconds remaining.
Clemons hit the second of two from the line with 8.0 seconds to play, but Payten Ricks and Isaiah Tripp each hit both ends of 1-and-1 opportunities in the last 7.2 to seal the victory.
Tevin Foster added 15 points and seven assists for Abilene Christian, while Ricks had 10 points for the Wildcats, who shot 50.8 percent for the game and made all 11 of their free throw attempts.
Burk led Campbell with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-6 beyond the arc. Clemons added 16, plus 6 assists, while
Shane Whitfield (15) and
Andrew Eudy (11) also hit double digits. The Camels shot 49 percent (27-55) from the floor, and 80 percent (20-25) from the line, but only 6-of-20 (.300) from beyond the arc.
ACU shot 65.5 percent (19-29) and hit 5-of-6 threes (.833) to grab a 46-35 halftime lead. An early 10-1 burst gave the Wildcats a 20-10 edge. Burk's 30-footer at the horn cut the deficit to 11 at the break.
After Lewis' bucket gave the visitors a 50-37 lead with 18:59 to go, the Camels held Abilene Christian without a field goal for the next 6:13. Whitfield scored eight points and Clemons assisted on four buckets in Campbell's 20-4 burst. Neither team led by more than three over the last 12:24 of regulation.
Clemons, who entered as the nation's third-leading scorer (27.7), had to leave the game with a cramp in his right leg with 3:35 to play and the Camels trailing 68-65. Burk, however, blocked Tripp's three at the key; then raced to the other end for a layup to cut the gap to one. Foster then hit two from the line with 12.1 remaining before Burk's game-tying trey.
Bowling Green 83, USC Upstate 74
Demajeo Wiggins, Dylan Frye and Rodrick Caldwell combined for 58 points to lead Bowling Green to an 83-74 victory over USC Upstate Friday in the Creek Classic at Gore Arena.
Wiggins and Frye scored 20 points each, while Caldwell added 18 for the Falcons (4-1), who won their third-straight game. Justin Turner and Daeqwon Plowden chipped in 10 each for Bowling Green, which knocked down 11-of-22 threes and shot 47 percent from the floor.
Ramel Thompkins led USC Upstate (2-4) with 18 points, including 4-of-6 from 3-point distance, Malik Moore had 16, Deion Holmes 13 and Mike Cunningham 12 for the Spartans.
Upstate trailed 46-36 at halftime, but opened the final period on a 14-3 run and took the lead (50-49) on Cunningham's bucket with 13:20 to play. Cunningham's jumper pushed the Spartan margin to 59-54 with 8:37 to go.
With the score tied at 66, Plowen's two free throws started a 12-2 run that pushed Bowling Green in front for good with 4:23 remaining. The Falcons hit 7-of-9 from the line in the last 55 seconds to seal the victory.
Wiggins made 8-of-13 shots and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, while Frye connected on 5-of-7 threes and 5-of-7 from the stripe. Caldwell was 6-of-10 from the field, 5-of-8 beyond the arc, and dealt 7 assists.
Jure Span handed out 7 assists, while Thompkins and Avery Diggs led Upstate with 8 boards apiece.
The Creek Classic continues Saturday and Sunday at Gore Arena. Saturday's action begins at 2 p.m. with Campbell hosting Bowling Green. USC Upstate meets Abilene Christian at 5 p.m.
