Smith’s record day leads Camels past Davidson 42-29

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Daniel Smith ran for a Campbell record 289 yards with four touchdowns, leading the Camels to a 42-29 win at Davidson.

With the win, Campbell (6-4, 5-2 PFL) clinches its second winning season of its modern era (CU reinstated its football program in 2008), matching its single-season record for wins (2011). The Camels also set a new program record for road wins in a season with their third.

CU topped Davidson for the fifth consecutive time in the series, dropping the Wildcats to 2-7 overall and 0-6 in PFL play with the loss.

Smith rushed for 289 yards on 23 carries, breaking De'Shawn Jones' 2015 single-game record, also on the road at Davidson (10/31/15).

A Leesburg, Va. native, Smith's 289 yards are the most by a FCS quarterback this season, and the third most overall.

Smith also surpassed Jones' single-season rushing record (1,079), and with one game to go in the season, has tallied 1,191 yards on the ground.

Smith also passed for a TD, going 7-for-18 with 156 yards passing and an interception.

Redshirt junior Aaron Blockmon, already Campbell's career leader in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, became CU's all-time leader in receptions with 101 (Ben Bolling, 100). Blockmon also hit 2,000 career receiving yards, hauling in three catches for 87 yards in the win.

Wesley Duggar paced Davidson with 139 yards and three touchdowns rushing, adding four catches for 47 yards. Tyler Phelps completed 32-of-60 passes for 287 yards and an interception, hitting eight different Wildcat receivers.

Jack Ryan and Carlos Merritt each posted 12 tackles for the Camels, while Ray Miller added 10. Merritt's fourth quarter interception marked his sixth pick of the year, tying the redshirt senior with Donte Washington's 2008 single-season record.

It was Campbell's FCS-leading 19th interception of the season, also setting a school single-season team record.

Smith's second TD of the day put Campbell ahead 21-15 with 2:39 to play in the first half.

After the break, the Camels drove 80 yards, led by a 47 yard Smith run and a 29 yard Blockmon catch to put CU on the one yard line, setting up Darius Barnes for the punch in. Davidson's ensuing drive stalled, and after a touchback, Smith broke down the left sideline for an 80 yard TD, putting Campbell ahead 35-15.

Davidson came within 35-29 with two third quarter touchdowns from Duggar, but Smith's fourth TD run, this time from 18 yards out, gave Campbell the 42-29 advantage.

Campbell totaled 344 yards rushing as a unit, posting 500 yards of total offense for a 7.2 yards per play average.

Campbell closes out the 2017 season next week, November 11, hosting Drake. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Barker-Lane Stadium.
