WASHINGTON, D.C. – Three scored in double figures to lead Howard over Campbell, 63-61, Friday evening inside Burr Gymnasium.
Summer Price notched a career-high 29 points on 10-of-26 shooting from the floor, including four from long range for the Fighting Camels (7-4). It was her second consecutive 20-plus point performance and fifth of the season.
Curstyn Moore led the Bison (4-8) with 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting, followed by Sarah Edmond's 12 points and Ayonna Williams' 11.
Howard jumped out to a five-point lead, 60-55, midway through the overtime session after a pair of three-point plays.
The Camels cut the deficit to one at 61-60 with 30 seconds left after a pair of
MaKala Rouse free throws, but the home side hit 2-of-4 from the line down the stretch to hold on for the win.
The Bison led by as many as seven in the first half, 16-9, with 2:20 left in the first quarter. Campbell slowly chipped away at the lead and took a two-point lead, 24-22, after
Kyra Davis' 3-pointer with 3:13 remaining in the half.
Each side hit a three in the final 15 seconds to keep the scoreline level at 27-27 entering the halftime break.
The home side used a quick 8-3 run to gain an eight-point lead, 40-32, with 3:12 left in the third quarter, a lead they held until 1:22 left in the contest.
Trailing by one, Price knocked down a pair of free throws to give CU its first lead in the second half, 54-53, with 1:22 left. Jayla Myles responded for Howard, knocking down 1-of-2 at the line with 41 seconds left to force overtime.
Caroline Bowns (2pts, 6reb),
Lauren McNamara-Clement (5pts, 5reb), Davis (8pts, 7reb), Price (29pts, 5reb), and Rouse (9pts, 9reb) each had at least five rebounds in the contest. Howard's Myles led all players with 13 rebounds and her teammate, Williams, grabbed nine.
Howard held a 51-44 edge on the glass and outscored Campbell 11-4 on second chance points. The Bison also held a slim edge in the paint, 30-24, and off the bench, 18-15.
CU connected on twice as many shots from beyond the arc than Howard, 6-3. They also boasted a 17-16 edge in points from the charity stripe.
Campbell will open up Big South play on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m. against UNC Asheville inside Gore Arena.
