BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Following two weeks of preseason training and exhibition matches, the Campbell University women's soccer program will travel to Charleston, S.C., to take on the College of Charleston for the 2017 season opener on Friday night. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Patriots Point Athletics Complex.
The Fighting Camels most recently faced UNC Greensboro, in which the Spartans came away with a 2-0 win. Campbell recorded six shots over the course of the contest, but the team could not manage to get the ball past UNCG's keeper.
CU will face off against the Cougars for the first time since 1997, which resulted in a 3-1 victory for the Camels. Campbell holds an all-time record of 7-0-2 against the College of Charleston, as well as a goal differential of 29-3.
In 2016, the College of Charleston went 10-7-3, including 3-3-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Cougars clinched its first-ever CAA tournament berth, but fell to James Madison, 1-0, in the opening round. After the season, four Cougars won All-CAA honors, including Lauren Killian (second), Laura Ortega (third), Rachel Kim (all-rookie) and Mary Kate Bowers (all-academic).
The 2017 squad returns 23 letter-winners from last season and welcomes 10 newcomers to the program. The key returners for the Cougars are Meredith Tunney and Maddy Brill-Edwards, who earned Preseason All-CAA accolades. Tunney is a sophomore defender who was a mainstay in the 2016 Cougar defense that established a 27-21 goal differential during the season. Brill-Edwards is a sophomore that also plays on the College of Charleston's back line, and recorded four shots on the season.
The College of Charleston competed in one exhibition match during its preseason, falling to South Carolina, 2-0, on August 10 at home.
