JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – North Florida scored a pair of second half goals to defeat Campbell, 2-0, Friday evening at Hodges Stadium.
Micah Smoak and Adrian Nunez tallied goals six minutes apart for the Ospreys in the victory.
"I liked our group's preparation and energy in the match tonight," said head coach
Dustin Fonder. "Unfortunately, we did not get the result we wanted, but we will look to build on our performances to match our team's united attitude."
UNF's (1-0) Micah Smoak scored the opening goal of the contest in the 69th minute. After a turnover in the Campbell half, Smoak's shot from 40 yards out took a deflection off a Campbell defender and found its way into the net.
Nunez doubled the lead for the home side in the 75th minute. Smoak's cross bounced around inside the box and fell at the feet of Nunez, where he put away the shot from inside of six yards.
Campbell (0-1) finished with eight total shots and four on target in the match. CU had a pair of close chances in the first half of play from
Michael Lewis and
Bastien Oberli.
Lewis beat his defender on the left flank, but Tord Pederson stopped the shot from seven yards out.
Oberli had a similar opportunity fall to his feet in the 44th minute. He collected the ball on the left side of goal where his attempt from close range was knocked out of play.
The Camels opened the second half with opportunities from
JJ Donnelly and
Carel Kayembe, but the UNF defense held strong against the CU attack.
Matthew Mozynski finished the night with five saves on seven shots. Arguably his best save came in the seventh minute of the game.
A through ball found the feet of Aiden D'Mello 15 yards away from goal that Mozynski charged and knocked away to keep the match scoreless.
Campbell finished with an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks, including five in the first half.
The Orange and Black return to action on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. at Jacksonville.
