Camels win Hampton Inn Inv., sweep TTU 3-0

Summer Schuitema named tournament MVP and Kayla Schanback surpasses 1,000 career digs

BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Campbell's volleyball team blanked Tennessee Tech 3-0 to finish undefeated in the Hampton Inn Holly Springs Invitational and claim the title of the season-opening event.

The Camels' Summer Schuitema was named MVP of the tournament after dishing out 88 assists and recording 28 digs between the three matches. The senior setter finished with her third-straight double-double with 24 assists and 12 digs versus the Golden Eagles (2-1).

Allena Heath put down a team-high 12 kills for Campbell (3-0) and was also named to the all-tournament team. Rachel Harty added 10 kills en route to all-tournament honors as well.

Senior libero Kayla Schanback recorded a match-high 25 digs and surpassed 1,000 digs for her career. She is the 11th player in Campbell history to reach that plateau.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the match, the Camels trailed for the majority of the third set. A 4-0 run gave Campbell its first lead of the set (16-15) capped off by a kill from Heath.

Three-straight kills from Harty put the Camels ahead 22-20, before the junior right side gave CU match point with a kill to make the score 24-20. TTU drew back within two, but Harty finished the match with her 10th kill to keep Campbell undefeated on the young season.

Kellie Williams finished with a match-high 17 kills for the Golden Eagles and was named an all-tournament selection. Shealene Williams joined her teammate on the all-tournament team after tallying 11 digs and six kills.

Madison Linxwiler added seven kills and a block for the Camels while Jessica Stocking had six digs and five kills.

Midway through the first set, Campbell turned a 10-7 deficit to a 12-10 advantage with a 5-0 spurt. A service ace from Heath gave the Camels a 23-18 lead late in the frame before a kill from Linxwiler and a TTU attack error gave CU the set victory.

CU raced out to a 6-1 lead in the second set before a 4-0 run by the Golden Eagles tied the score at 12-12. A kill by Heath made it a 23-20 Camel advantage late before a service error by Allison Morrett ended the frame as Campbell took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Camels opened the day with a 3-0 victory over N.C. Central on Saturday morning.

Campbell will return to action next weekend at the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va. The Camels will take on Penn and the host Patriots on Friday, Sept.1 before facing Central Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 2.
