Campbell to host Chicago State on Sunday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell University (1-1-0) women's soccer team will face off against Chicago State (1-2-0) on Sunday afternoon. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

CU opened up the season last weekend, posting a 1-1 record, including a 1-0 loss versus College of Charleston and a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State. Sunday's win over the Mountaineers marked the seventh consecutive year in which the Camels have won the home opener.

Haley Thoma scored the game-winner for the Fighting Camels off a penalty kick in the 50th minute. This marked Thoma's second career goal as a member of the CU squad, with her first coming against USC Upstate in 2016.

Erin Scott recorded her first career shutout as a Fighting Camel on Sunday after saving two Mountaineer shots and fending off a number of other scoring opportunities. Samar Azem earned her first career win as the head coach of the Campbell women's soccer program.

Azem named senior Shelby Denkert, sophomore Alexa Genas and junior Skylar Wilcox as the team captains of the 2017 squad.

The match versus CSU on Sunday afternoon will be CU's first-ever matchup versus the Cougars. Chicago State's women's soccer program was established in 2014 and has an all-time record of 3-54-1.

Chicago State is coming off of its first shutout victory in program history, a 1-0 win over Saint Xavier on Friday evening. Sara Marcotte scored the game-winner for the Cougars, a shot from 20 yards out past the SXU goalkeeper. CSU keeper Audra Wisehart earned her first career shutout after saving two shots during her first start on the season.

During the opening weekend, the Cougars hosted Idaho State and Northern Iowa, going 0-2 with a 5-0 and 3-0 loss, respectively. CSU fired away eight shots during the two matches, but could not get one through either defensive line.

Chicago State is coming off of a 1-16-0 record in 2016, including a 0-7-0 ledger in Western Athletic Conference play. The Cougars' sole win of last season came against Saint Xavier, a 3-2 victory. The 2017 squad features 12 returning letter-winners and adds six newcomers.

The CSU women's soccer program features a completely new coaching staff. Head coach Kevin Meek, assistant coach Cristiano Costa and graduate assistant Salvador Uriostequi are all in their first season with the Cougars.
