Campbell and ODU draw 1-1 Tuesday

NORFOLK, Va. – Campbell battled Old Dominion to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening at the ODU Soccer Complex.

CU's unbeaten streak has stretched to five games after winning the previous four matches.

"I thought our team showed tons of character, belief, and commitment to fight for one another tonight," stated head coach Dustin Fonder. "I don't think we ever wavered, even though we conceded first and from that point on, we just continued to grow into the game."

The two sides combined for 30 shots in the contest as ODU edged Campbell, 18-12, including 5-3 on target.

ODU opened the scoring in the 30th minute of play, courtesy of Max Wilschrey. Wilschrey gathered a loose ball in the midfield and his shot from 35 yards out slipped under a diving Matthew Mozynski for the opening tally.

The Camels fought back throughout the second half and equalized midway through the session. In the 74th minute of play, Carel Kayembe lofted a free kick into the box from 30 yards away and JJ Donnelly buried a header from six yards out.

The goal was Donnelly's fourth in the last two matches for Campbell, as he netted a hat trick against Howard last Saturday.

CU had a trio of corner kicks in the final few minutes of the second half, but ODU's defense stymied the Camels' efforts to take the lead.

Campbell's best opportunity came with four minutes left in the second overtime, as CU had a free kick and a corner kick in back-to-back sequences, but they were unable to capitalize on both chances.

"Our team's tremendous fitness levels and depth paid dividends as the game wore on," Fonder added. "We understand that a draw on the road is a good thing, but we were trying to win until the very end."

The Camels out shot the Monarchs in the overtime periods, 5-3, and gained the lone corner kick of the extra time.

Campbell travels to William & Mary for a Saturday afternoon contest at 2 p.m.
