PRINCESS ANNE, Md. --- Three players finished in double-figure kills and Campbell edged Maryland Eastern Shore 3-2 in the final game of the Henson's Hawk Invitational Saturday night. The Camels won the event with a 3-0 record over the weekend.
Â
Jessica Stocking led all players with 17 kills, which matched a career high performance.
Madison Linxwiler also matched a career-high with 14 kills and
Allena Heath put down 13. Stocking tallied a double-double with a season-high 16 digs.
Â
Heath was named an all-tournament first team selection while Stocking,
Summer Schuitema and
Madison Linxwiler earned second team honors.
Â
"This was a really good tune-up weekend in preparation for Big South play," said Campbell head coach
Greg Goral. "We executed at a high-level against Coppin State and Delaware State, and we fought through some adversity against UMES. They put a tremendous amount of pressure on us with our service and some strong attacking.
Â
"We also struggled serving quality balls but I like how my team responded in the end. We even had a deficit in game five and our team showed a lot of poise in continuing to manufacture points when we needed them."
Â
The Camels (10-4) held a 4-1 lead early in the decisive fifth set. However, a 6-0 run for UMES (10-4) made it an 8-5 deficit. The Hawks made it an 11-8 lead off a kill from Serea Mere.
Â
Campbell responded with a 5-0 spurt, capped by a kill from Heath, to take a 13-11 advantage. UMES drew back within one, but a Stocking kill gave the Camels match point at 14-12. The Hawks responded with a kill and a handling error called on Schuitema sent the set to extra points tied at 14-14.
Â
A service error from the Hawks in the ensuing rally set Campbell with match-point again at 15-14.
Madee Miner steeped to the serving line and Stocking ended it with a kill to cap the thrilling five-set win.
Â
Schuitema tallied a double-double with 44 assists and 12 digs and added five kills.
Kayla Schanback matched Stocking's match-high 16 digs while
Rachel Harty put down four kills.
Â
After the Hawks took the opening set, the Camels reeled off six-straight points to take a 9-4 lead in the second. A 5-0 run made it a 14-5 Campbell advantage, and it was still a nine-point lead at 21-12 off a kill from Heath. UMES would only be able to draw back within 24-17 before Heath ended it with another kill.
Â
The Hawks reeled off four-straight points to take a 9-6 advantage in the third set. However, the Camels responded with an 8-0 run to take a 14-9 lead midway through the set. Later in the frame, UMES cut the score to 20-18 off a service ace from Lucia Babic.
Â
The Camels' lead grew to 22-18 before the Hawks cut the deficit to 22-21 with a 3-0 spurt. The teams traded the next six points and CU led 24-23.
Hannah Schneggenburger ended the set with a kill to put Campbell up 2-1.
Â
UMES used a pair of 3-0 spurts and led by as many as 22-15 before taking the fourth set by six and forcing the winner-take-all fifth set.
Â
Iva Vujosevic led the Hawks with 14 kills followed close behind by Lucia Babic with 13. Maja Jankovic led UMES with 15 digs and Ivana Blazevic dished out 27 assists.
Â
After 10 non-conference victories, the Camels will open Big South play next weekend (Sept. 22-23) on the road at UNC Asheville and Winthrop.
