WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Campbell University (4-4-0) women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to in-state rival UNCW at the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm really happy with some of the things that we're doing," said head coach
Samar Azem. "We've got to be more definitive about specific moments in the game that are making or breaking us, particularly in the first and last five minutes of the half."
Molly McGarry was the difference maker for the Seahawks, as she netted both goals for UNCW on the day.
Siara Southerland, who is native to the Wilmington area, scored the lone goal for the Fighting Camels.
Erin Scott and
Natalya Marcove split time between the posts for CU, with Scott starting and Marcove coming in for the second frame. Marcove made two crucial saves in the second half to help keep the Camels in the game.
"We called on Natalya to come in the game because we wanted to use her distribution. She had some really clutch saves that kept us in the game," said Azem.
UNCW took an early 1-0 lead after McGarry recorded her first goal of the day off of a corner kick in the second minute of play. McGarry headed the ball into the back of the net off of Serenity Waters' kick.
The Seahawks dominated ball possession during the opening frame, playing almost exclusively in the Camels' defensive third. UNCW connected on another corner kick in the 43rd minute of play, as McGarry headed it past Scott to put the Seahawks up 2-0.
Shannon Wratchford registered the lone shot of the first half for CU in the 45th minute of play, but her ball went high.
Campbell played much stronger on the offensive side of the ball in the second half, registering five shots and earning two corner kicks.
In the 57th minute, Southerland went one-on-one with UNCW's goalkeeper and managed to slip it by her. This was Southerland's second goal of the season and the first since the Chicago State game on Aug. 27.
"I was proud of Siara for scoring in front of the home crowd. We talked about wanting to get more diagonal balls in behind the back line and Siara did really well with that," said Azem.
The Camels best chances to equalize came in the final four minutes of play, as
Shelby Denkert and
Shannon Wratchford both registered shots.
Denkert got her head on the ball off a free kick from 35 yards out in the 86th minute, but it went just high. On another free kick opportunity, Wratchford headed the ball towards the goal, but UNCW's keeper made a save.
Campbell fired away six shots over the course of the match to UNCW's 12. Wratchford led the Camels with three shots, one of which was on frame. The Seahawks earned nine corner kicks on Sunday to the Fighting Camels' three.
Up next, CU will open up Big South play versus Presbyterian on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Clinton, S.C. For the latest information about Campbell women's soccer, make sure to follow @GoCamelsWSOC on Twitter.
