CLINTON, S.C. – Alexa Genas netted a career high of four goals to lead the Campbell University (5-4-0, 1-0-0) women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Presbyterian (2-6-0, 0-1-0) at Martin Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
"It's really great to start conference off with a win, especially a road win," said head coach
Samar Azem. "PC is a very difficult team to play because they work extremely hard. We knew we would have to adjust our style to deal with the pressure they apply in the defensive half."
With four goals on the game, Genas earned her second hat trick in three games, as she also scored three against Western Carolina last Friday. Genas registered goals in the 35th, 44th, 46th and 56th minutes of play for the Fighting Camels. She is the first player since Jenn Stephenson to score four or more goals in a single game.
"In front, Alexa was a really big threat today. She almost scored a fifth goal off of a fantastic free kick. It's not easy to score seven goals in three games against anyone, especially the good teams that we have played," said Azem.
The Albuquerque, N.M., native is currently ranked first in the Big South in goals with nine through the first nine games. Genas has already surpassed her total of eight goals during her freshman campaign in 2016.
Erin Scott and
Natalya Marcove split time between the posts for Campbell, with Scott playing for 65 minutes and Marcove coming in for the final 25 minutes of play. Marcove allowed her first goal of the season off a strike by PC's Kristen Bane in the 66th minute.
The Blue Hose got off to a strong start in the opening frame, as PC fired away three shots, including two on goal, during the first 20 minutes of play. CU was stronger on the attack in the second part of the half, which was started off by shots by Genas and
Shelby Denkert in the 24th and 30th minutes.
Genas notched her first goal of the day in the 35th minute after collecting a loose ball in the box and slipping it past the Blue Hose goalie. Nine minutes later, Genas fired away a shot from 25 yards out into the top of the net to put the Fighting Camels up 2-0 at the half.
Just 28 seconds into the second half, Genas earned her second career hat trick after receiving a pass from
Siara Southerland inside the box. The duo also connected for the fourth goal, as Southerland found Genas in the box, who fired away a shot into the back of the net in the 56th minute of play.
After a flurry of CU goals, Presbyterian got on the board in the 66th minute of action following a shot by Kelsey Yeager that slipped by Marcove. Yeager's second goal of the season was assisted by Frances Whitesides.
Campbell registered 13 shots over the course of the game to Presbyterian's seven. The Camels also held the advantage in both shots on frame, 9-4, and corners, 5-3. Genas led CU with eight shots, including six on frame.
Callie Beckwith, Denkert,
Abby Major and
Siara Southerland also notched shots for the Camels.
The Camels will return to action on Wednesday, as CU hosts the Radford Highlanders at the Eakes Athletics Complex at 7 p.m. For the latest information about Campbell women's soccer, make sure to follow @GoCamelsWSOC on Twitter.
