BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Matt Mattis scored the lone goal that lifted UNCG (2-4-1) over Campbell (4-3-1), 1-0, on Wednesday night at the Eakes Athletics Complex.
After his first attempt was blocked, Mattis volleyed the rebound over
Matthew Mozynski and clipped the underside of the crossbar for his second goal of the season in the 65th minute of play.
JJ Donnelly continued to lead Campbell's offensive attack. He finished the match with a match-high six shots, including three on target. His best opportunity came in the 15th minute, as his header from 10 yards out went just wide of the goal.
Despite coming out strong in the second half, registering three shots on frame and earning a pair of corner kicks, CU was unable to break the 0-0 deadlock.
With UNCG leading, 1-0,
Gideon Betz made a stout tackle in the 69th minute of play to prevent a breakaway opportunity for the visitors.
Mattis broke through the midfield and was one-on-one with Betz, looking to sprint past the Schluchtern, Germany, native, but the sophomore defender held strong and made a sliding tackle to dispossess Mattis and stop the attack.
Campbell had a pair of corner kicks and a shot within the box in the final 10 minutes of play, but the home side was unable to crack the UNCG defense for the late equalizer.
The Camels outshot the Spartans 14-11, including 5-3 on frame. The teams combined for 13 corner kicks, a 7-6 edge in favor of Campbell.
Campbell opens up Big South play on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Radford.
