Camels fall at Winthrop, 3-0

Summer Schuitema tallies her 10th double-double, but Campbell falls on the road

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Campbell dropped a 3-0 decision (25-21, 25-21, 26-24) to Winthrop on the road Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference volleyball action. Allena Heath led the Camels (10-6, 0-2 BSC) with nine kills.
 
Rachel Harty and Jessica Stocking put down eight kills apiece. Summer Schuitema tallied her 10th double-double of the season with 19 assists and 16 digs. Kayla Schanback added 14 digs while Heath barely missed a double-double with nine digs.
 
Campbell used a 9-1 run to take a 15-9 lead in the first set. However, Winthrop (9-6, 1-1) scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a 19-16 advantage.
 
The Camels called a timeout when the Eagles made it a 22-18 lead. CU was able to draw within 24-21 on back-to-back kills from Heath, but a Tanja Neyer kill earned the first-set win for Winthrop.
 
The Eagles raced out to a 7-1 lead in the second set. However, Campbell used a 5-0 spurt to tie the game at 10-10. Winthrop broke a 13-13 deadlock with a 3-0 run and later held a 20-16 advantage off another kill from Neyer.
 
An Eagle attack error pulled CU within 22-20 of the lead, but back-to-back points from Winthrop earned set point. Heath fought it off once with a kill before Syndey Gunter ended it with a kill.
 
The Camels held an early 7-4 lead in the third set and a 13-10 advantage midway through the frame. Harty made it a 15-13 lead, but Winthrop re-gained the advantage at 16-15 with a 3-0 spurt.
 
Neither side led by more than two for the remainder of the set, and Keaupono Fey earned match point for the Eagles at 24-22 with a kill. Back-to-back kills from Stocking and Heath kept the match alieve and sent the game to extra points tied at 24-24. However, back-to-back Camel attacking errors gave Winthrop the 3-0 sweep.
 
Phoebe WU led all players with a match-high 12 kills and Gunter tallied 10. WU had a double-double with 14 digs and Carlie Skelton tallied a match-high 19 digs. Siani Yamaguchi dished-out a match-high 36 assists.
 
The Camels will return to action in their Big South home opener against in-state rival High Point on Tuesday at 7 p.m. inside Gore Arena.
