BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Alex Egeonu's 80th minute goal lifted Campbell over Liberty, 2-1, Friday evening at the Eakes Athletics Complex.
The Camels (5-4-1, 1-1-0) earned their first conference win of the 2017 campaign and broke its four-game winless streak. Liberty falls to 5-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in Big South play.
JJ Donnelly put Campbell on the board in the sixth minute of play. He received a long pass from
Samuel Orisatoki, settled it, and finished his shot across frame to the right side of goal.
Chase Hovious equalized for Liberty in the 27th minute.
Matthew Mozynski stopped Tresor Mbuyu's initial shot, but Hovious collected the rebound and finished from 14 yards away.
Campbell had an opportunity to add to its lead in the 38th minute.
Carel Kayembe and
Ian Rees both had chances inside the box off a CU free kick, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
Nine minutes into the second half the Camels got off a trio of shots, but the Liberty defense held its ground to keep the score line even.
CU kept knocking on the door, looking for its second goal, as
Josh Hughes and
Drew Walters had chances in the attacking in the 74th and 77th minutes respectively, but neither attempt found the net.
Alex Egeonu's header in the 80th minute broke the tie and clinched the victory for the Camels.
Gabe Parrish played in a low cross from the right side and Egeonu beat his defender to the near post for the diving header finish past Liberty goalkeeper James Knoebel.
Campbell out shot Liberty, 19-12, in the match but equaled in shots on goal at six apiece.The Flames edged CU in corner kicks, 8-3.
Mozynski stopped five shots while his counterpart, Knoebel, notched four in the loss.
Campbell heads to High Point on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. for the team's first road conference match of the year.
