CU hosts UNC Asheville on Family Weekend

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell University (6-4-0, 2-0-0) women's soccer team continues Big South play versus UNC Asheville (4-5-1, 0-1-0) on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Eakes Athletics Complex during Family Weekend in the Creek.

The Fighting Camels are coming off of a 2-0 victory over Radford on Wednesday in Buies Creek to move to 2-0 in Big South play. Siara Southerland and Alexa Genas netted goals to lead the Camels over the league-leading Highlanders.

This is the first time since 2011 that the Camels have started conference play with a 2-0 record. The 2011 squad opened conference play with victories over UNC Asheville (3-0) and Winthrop (4-1). After knocking off top-ranked Radford, Campbell sits atop the Big South standings.

Alexa Genas has been on a scoring tear of late, netting eight goals during Campbell's last four games. The Albuquerque, N.M., native is ranked second in the NCAA in total goals (10), third in goals per game (1.00), fifth in total points (23) and sixth in points per game (2.30).

Genas has been named the Big South Attacking Player of the Week for the last two weeks after scoring three goals versus Western Carolina and four against Presbyterian. She has won three conference weekly awards in her career at Campbell, as she was also named the Big South Freshman of the Week on Sept. 26, 2016.

Erin Scott and Natalya Marcove have split time between the posts for CU all season long. Scott has started all 10 games for the Camels, and Marcove has played in the second half on four occasions.

Scott has allowed eight goals on the season for a goals-against-average of 1.04, while Marcove has conceded one for a GAA of 0.44. In addition, first-year goalkeeper Scott has made 28 saves this season, which is tied for eighth in the Big South.

This will be Campbell's 13th match versus UNC Asheville, with the last one resulting in a 2-1 victory for CU in Asheville, N.C., on Oct. 21, 2016. The Camels lead the all-time series 7-6-0 and hold a 27-21 advantage in the goal differential.

UNC Asheville is ranked seventh in the Big South with a record of 0-1-0 in conference play. The Bulldogs were scheduled to play Gardner-Webb on Sept. 27, but the match was re-scheduled for Oct. 24.

The Bulldogs are 4-5-1 on year following wins over VMI, Wofford, Jacksonville and South Carolina State, losses to North Florida, Kennesaw State, Elon, USC Upstate and Charleston Southern, and a draw with UAB. Asheville opened up Big South play with a 3-0 loss to Charleston Southern on Sept. 23 at the Greenwood Soccer Field in Asheville, N.C.

Courtney Naber has anchored the Bulldog attack this season, leading the team in goals (4), points (8), shots (33), shots on goal (14) and game-winning goals (2). Naber was named the Big South Attacking Player of the Week in consecutive weeks on Aug. 21 and Aug. 28.

Freshman Bryson Lee has been the primary goalkeeper for UNC Asheville this season, as she has played all but four minutes between the posts for the Bulldogs. Lee has allowed 15 goals on the season for a goals-against-average of 1.44. She has collected 36 saves on the year for a save percentage of .706.

The match will have live audio that will be available on GoCamels.com, with Zach Berly on the call. Live stats of the match can be accessed here. For up-to-date updates about the game, make sure to follow @GoCamelsWSOC on Twitter.

Saturday is women's soccer 'Athletes for Athletes' game and several of CU's other varsity athletic teams will be in attendance in support of the Fighting Camels.

Up next, the Orange and Black will travel to Farmville, Va., for a midweek match versus Longwood on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Campbell will return home to the Eakes Athletics Complex on Oct. 11 as CU takes on Charleston Southern.
