BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell University (3-2-0) women's soccer team will hit the road for a match up with American (1-5-0) in Washington, D.C., on Friday afternoon. The game is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. at the Reeves Athletics Campus.
CU is coming off of a 4-0 blanking of South Carolina State on Saturday evening in Orangeburg, S.C.
Shelby Denkert,
Rosie O'Neal and
Alexa Genas netted goals in the first half to put the Fighting Camels up 3-0 at halftime.
Abby Major notched the fourth and final goal of the game, a volley off of a
Mackenzie Southern cross in the 59th minute of action.
The Orange and Black registered 20 shots, including 10 on frame, to the Bulldogs' three over the course of the match.
Kylee Arno led all Camels' with three shots, while
Rosie O'Neal posted a team leading two shots on goal on Saturday. In addition, Campbell secured 10 corner kicks to SC State's three.
Erin Scott and
Natalya Marcove split time between the posts on Saturday for CU, with Scott playing the opening frame and Marcove entering the game for the second half. Marcove saved a shot by SCSU's Brandy Vaca in the second half to preserve the clean sheet for the Fighting Camels.
On Wednesday, Major was named the Big South Freshman of the Week after scoring her first collegiate goal and registering an assist against the Bulldogs. This marked Campbell's first conference weekly award of the 2017 season.
The match on Friday will mark Campbell's third match up versus American in program history. CU has an all-time record of 1-1-0 versus the Eagles, with a Camel win in 2016 and a loss in 1992.
The Orange and Black hosted AU in the opening weekend of the 2016 season, a 4-1 win for the Fighting Camels. Headed into Friday's match, CU leads the all-time goal differential, 6-4.
American enters the third weekend of competition with a record of 1-5-0, which includes a win over VMI and losses to Stetson, South Florida, VCU, Longwood and George Washington.
The Eagles are coming off of a narrow 1-0 loss to the Colonials in a cross-town rivalry at the Reeves Athletics Complex. GWU's Alexis Williams netted the game-winning goal in the 55th minute of play to halt a solid defensive performance by the Eagles.
AU posted a 1-16-2 record in 2016, including a 0-6-2 ledger in Patriot League action. American's lone win of the season was a 1-0 victory over Longwood in September.
The Eagles added a highly touted recruiting class of eight freshmen and two freshmen in an effort to return to competitiveness in conference play. In addition, senior Kaylee Hillard and Audrey Denkler have returned to the field after missing most of the 2016 campaign due to injury.
