Camels look to extend streak Monday at Longwood

Campbell has won its last three games

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Two teams surging in January meet Monday when Campbell (9-8, 3-2 Big South) travels to Longwood (5-13, 2-3) for a 7:00 p.m. start at Willett Hall.

Campbell has won its last three outings - rallying late in the last two - and is coming off a 65-64 victory Friday over High Point at Gore Arena.  Chris Clemons' deep 3 at the buzzer provided the winning margin as CU closed the game on a 12-2 run over the final 1:45.

Clemons scored 25 points, Cory Gensler added 13 and Marcus Burk 11 for the Camels, who shot 64 percent (16-25) from the floor in the second half and erased a 9-point deficit at the break.

Longwood won its second in the last three games with a 58-51 decision Friday at Liberty. The Lancers scored the final 14 points of the night and Isaiah Walton tallied 20 of his 22 points in the final period.

With Walton, Charles Glover and Damarion Geter sidelined for multiple games with injuries, Longwood lost seven in a row before beating Gardner-Webb 79-73 on Jan. 6.  LWU fell 90-80 at pre-season Big South favorite UNC Asheville last Tuesday before claiming its first road victory of the season Friday at Liberty.

Campbell leads the Big South Conference in scoring (82.4 ppg), field goal percentage (.504) - a mark that stands 13th in the country - and 3-point (.401) field goal percentage.

Longwood is 4-5 at Willett Hall this year, 1-1 vs. the Big South at home, while Campbell stands 2-5 away from Gore Arena, 1-1 in league road games.

Junior Chris Clemons, the pre-season Big South player of the year, sits on top of the Big South (24.1) scoring charts and rates 6th nationally.  Clemons owns the nation's longest active double-figure scoring streak (65 games).

Sophomore Marcus Burk is 3rd in the BSC scoring race (17.2) and is tops in field goal percentage (.538). Burk has scored at least 20 points 8 times in the last 15 outings.

The Lancers trio of guards - Isaiah Walton (17.7), B.K. Ashe (12.6) and Charles Glover (8.7) are the second-highest scoring guard trio - 39.0 ppg - in the Big South behind Campbell's group of Clemons (24.1), Burk (17.2) and Cory Gensler (9.4) who combine for 50.7 of CU"s 82.4 points per outing.

LAST TIME OUT
CampbellChris Clemons hit a pullup three at the buzzer to lift Campbell to a 65-64 win Friday night at Gore Arena. Clemons scored 16 of his game-high 25 points in the second half and the Camels (9-8, 3-2) closed the game on a 12-2 run to win their third-straight Big South Conference game.  Andre Fox led High Point (7-9, 2-3) with 20 points and his pullup 17-foot jumper gave the Panthers their largest lead (62-53) with 2:03 remaining before the Camels started their final rally.  Clemons tallied eight of his 25 in the final 1:45, while dealing four assists and making three steals.  Gensler added 13 points, including 3-of-4 from three, plus assists, while Burk finished with 11 points and four steals.  The Big South Conference's top shooting team, Campbell entered the game hitting better than 50 percent of its shots, but made only 9-of-27 in the opening period.  However, the Camels knocked down 16-of-25 (.640) in the final half and finished the game at 48.1 percent (25-52).
Longwood - Isaiah Walton scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half and the Lancers (5-13, 2-3 Big South) closed the game on a 14-0 run Friday to stun Liberty 58-51 on the road.  Longwood held the Flames to just 39 percent shooting and outscored the hosts 38-23 in the final period.

NOTABLE
  • Campbell has dropped its last three trips to Farmville, but by a total of only 8 points.  Longwood defeated CU 70-65 in the 2014-15 season, 80-79 in '15-16 and 79-77 in last year's Big South opener at Willett Hall.
  • Last year at Farmville, senior Khris Lane scored 30 points and fellow senior Darrion Allen tipped in his own miss with six seconds to play to lead Longwood to a 79-77 victory. Chris Clemons led the Camels with 24 points and Shane Whitfield added 19.
  • The Camels ended a five-game losing streak to Longwood last Feb. 9 with an 83-79 triumph over the Lancers at Gore Arena. Chris Clemons (25), Shane Whitfield (20), Marcus Burk (13) and Cory Gensler (13) hit double figures by the Camels, while Isaiah Walton scored a career-high 28 for Longwood.
  • Campbell and Longwood did not face any common opponents during the non-conference portion of the schedule.
  • Longwood's projected starting lineup includes four transfers - three who previously played at other Division I institutions. Isaiah Walton played at UC Davis, B.K. Ashe and Charles Glover were at Mount St. Mary's, while sophomore Jahleem Montague started his collegiate career at Palm Beach State CC.  Red-shirt senior Damarion Geter is the lone Lancer on the roster who has played at least four seasons at Longwood.
  • Following Monday's game, Campbell returns home Thursday (Jan. 18) to host Charleston Southern in a 7:00 p.m. start.
