Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Winthrop holds off Camels 1-0

CU outshoots Eagles 24-7, but no goals

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jonathan Foster scored the game's lone goal and Winthrop dealt Campbell a 1-0 men's soccer defeat Saturday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

Aidan McCormick made six saves and the Eagles (3-8, 2-4 Big South) won despite being outshot by a 24-7 margin.

Campbell (5-6-1, 2-2) hit the post in the first minute and saw McCormick make two diving saves in the waning minutes while dropping its second-straight game.

Just seconds into the match, Matt Lock drilled a shot that beat McCormick, but bounded off the base of the left post.  The Camels outshot the Eagles 10-2 in the opening period, but neither team was able to find the net.

Camel keeper Matt Karasinski saved Alfie Rogers' curling shot over his crossbar in the 66th minute to preserve the deadlock.  However, a Winthrop counter attack three minutes later provided what proved to be the lone strike of the evening.

On the counter, George Orfanidis played the ball to the right flank, where Michael Smith crossed it into the area. Foster beat his defender to the ball and his right-footed volley entered the left side of Karasinski's goal for his second strike of the season.

Less than 10 minutes later, Alex Egeonu broke into the box, but McCormick left his feet for the save. While still on the ground, McCormick stopped Thibaut Jacquel's rebound attempt.

In the final minute, JJ Donnelly nearly equalized, but his shot was deflected wide of the left post for a corner kick.  However, the Camels were unable to capitalize on any of their seven corners on the night.

Campbell returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Old Dominion at 7 p.m.  Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the Eakes Complex for the "Bark for Life" event.
