BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Stina Kleppe netted both Gardner-Webb goals as Campbell (5-10-1, 4-4-1 Big South) fell to Gardner-Webb (9-4-4, 6-1-2 Big South) 2-1 Saturday night.
Neither team scored in the opening period but
McKenna de Graaf scored her first goal of the season for the match's opening score. In the 55
th minute
Rosie O'Neal played the ball to de Graaf for the score after the ball was placed in the box off a corner kick.
"Credit to Gardner Webb. they didn't't let up after going down a goal, and they finished the game. This is the point in the season where being quality for 90 minutes matters," said head coach Samar Azem. "I think our team has done a lot of growing and we are starting to turn a corner with our performances. Game was tied and Anna Brantley hit a rocket that their defender cleared off the line. If that goes in then the game changes, but those are the opportunities we have to create more. I think our team has been doing a great job of learning and growing. To go on the road and perform well in a tough environment is great sign of our growth. Next time we finish these games. We are taking a lot from today into Tuesday's match."
Stina Kleppe then netted two unanswered goals to close out the match. Kleppe fired her first goal from right outside the 18 to inside the left post in the 64
th minute before Maddie Turlington played the ball to her in the middle of the box for the game deciding goal in the 86
th minute.
Campbell was able to keep the ball in their attacking third for the majority of the match by registering eight corner kicks to GWU's two.
Erin Scott recorded five saves on the night over 90 minutes of action between the posts to push her total to 73 on the season.
Campbell returns to the pitch on Tuesday, October 3 for the regular season finale at home against USC Upstate with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m.
