Gardner-Webb tops Camels 35-7

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Gardner-Webb forced five turnovers, defeating Campbell 35-7 in Big South play at Barker-Lane Stadium Saturday.

A record crowd of 6,712 packed Barker-Lane Stadium, resetting the mark for the third straight CU Homecoming date.

GWU (2-6, 1-1 Big South) ended a six game losing streak with the win over the Camels (5-3, 0-2 Big South), who were hosting their first ever Big South football game. The loss ended a four game winning streak for Campbell in home conference openers.

The Runnin' Bulldogs picked up three Campbell fumbles, converting two into touchdowns, and intercepted two passes.

A.J. Moses ran for 100 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown, anchoring a GWU rushing attack that amassed 228 yards on the ground. Moses added 34 yards receiving on five grabs, helping GWU build a 13-0 first quarter lead with a one yard TD run.

Campbell cut the GWU lead to 13-7 on Caleb Snead's 26-yard TD catch from Jayson DeMild, but Gardner-Webb found the end zone on its next two possessions, including Jordan Smith's 48-yard score to Braylin Collins, taking a 28-7 advantage into halftime.

Smith completed 11-of-20 passes for 167 yards and four touchdowns, adding 45 yards rushing for GWU. Kyle Horton made two catches, both for touchdowns. Collins tallied a team-high 82 yards on two catches.

Snead paced Campbell with 119 yards on seven catches with a touchdown, his second-straight 100-yard receiving game. Aaron Blockmon added five catches for 33 yards, while Rocky Reid rushed 13 times for 42 yards. DeMild completed 25-of-43 pass attempts for 279 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions.

Darien Reynolds led the GWU defense with 13 tackles, adding an interception and a forced fumble. Triston Dozier also picked off a pass and forced a fumble, adding three pass breakups and seven tackles.

Jack Ryan totaled 11 tackles, including a sack for the Camels. Damien Dozier collected 3.5 tackles for loss with 1.0 sack, posting eight total stops. 11 Camels combined for a season-best 12 tackles for loss for Campbell.

Next up for the Camels will be a trip to No. 2 Kennesaw State on November 3. Campbell will then head to Presbyterian on November 10 before closing out the season at home on November 17, hosting Charleston Southern.
