NORFOLK, Va. – Behind a 65.2-percent shooting effort in the second half, Campbell women's basketball defeated Norfolk State, 57-49, in Tuesday's matinee action inside the Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall.
Campbell improved to 3-1 with the win, while Norfolk State fell to 2-3.
Taya Bolden and Lauren McNamara-Clement led the Camels in scoring, posting 11 points apiece. Bolden totaled six rebounds, while McNamara-Clement had three boards and three blocks.
Kyra Davis finished the night with eight points, all of which came in the third quarter. Caroline Bowns gathered seven points, while dishing out a season-high four assists. Lauren Carter also posted seven points with two blocks.
Norfolk State opened the game on a 6-0 spurt before the Camels responded with their own 6-0 run to tie it back up. Campbell was unable to take the lead in the first half; however, Ashlyn Hampton's three as time expired set the score at 19-18 heading into the break.
Out of the half, Campbell earned its first lead (21-19) on Davis' triple at the top of the key. Campbell led 30-23 at the 7:08 mark of the third quarter, capping a 7-2 run to open the period. However, the Spartans used a 10-0 run to regain the lead at 33-30 with 4:19 to go in the third. The two teams went into the final period tied at 41 following Bowns' jumper with under a second to go.
CU opened the fourth by reeling off six straight points to take the lead, which would not be relinquished. NSU did cut the lead to four, but a key second-chance point by Hayley Barber with 32 seconds to helped seal the win, putting the Camels up 55-49. Bowns went to the free-throw line with 16 seconds remaining and knocked them both down, resulting in the 57-49 final decision.
Next up, the Camels will travel to Miami, Fla., for the FIU Thanksgiving Tournament with a game on Friday and Sunday. Friday's contest is set for a 2 p.m. tip-off, while Sunday's game will begin either at noon or at 2 p.m.
