Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Camels defeat UNCG 53-49, extend win streak to six games

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell University women's basketball team won its sixth straight game on Wednesday night inside Gore Arena, outlasting UNCG, 53-49.

Campbell moved to 6-1 through its first seven games for the first time since the 2011-12 season, while UNC Greensboro fell to 3-3 with the setback.

Caroline Bowns posted a season-high 13 points, hitting 2-of-6 from beyond the arc, while Lauren Carter reached double-figures (12) for the third time this season. Taya Bolden pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, followed closely by Kyra Davis' seven boards. Luana Serranho dished out four assists.

Just 19 seconds into the game, Bowns opened the scoring with a short jumper to take an early 2-0 advantage. UNCG responded with a 7-0 run, later pushing its lead to seven points to close out the first quarter, 16-9. The Camels allowed the Spartans to score six points off eight turnovers in the first period.

Campbell outscored UNCG 14-4 in the second quarter, closing out the final 5:25 minutes on a 10-2 run. Carter's three-pointer at the 2:27 mark earned CU its first lead (19-18) since Bowns' jumper to open the game.

Much like the first quarter, UNCG used a quick 8-0 spurt to retake the lead and go up by four, 27-23, with 6:44 remaining. The Camels were unable to regain the lead until Bowns hit a three-pointer just before the buzzer, earning CU the 37-35 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

In the final period, a 7-0 run that featured layups by Davis and Hayley Barber, and then another three by Bowns, pushed Campbell's lead to five points (49-46) with 1:28 remaining. The Spartans cut the deficit to two points twice before Ashlyn Hampton knocked down two free throws with one second to go, resulting in the 53-49 final decision.

Campbell will continue its three-game home stretch by hosting William Peace on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m., and then face Howard on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 11:30 a.m. as part of Education Day.
