Camels roll by Trinity Baptist 79-29

CU sets Gore Arena mark for fewest points allowed

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Chris Clemons scored 22 points, Cory Gensler added 15 and Campbell defeated Trinity Baptist 79-29 Thursday night to set a Gore Arena record for fewest points allowed.

The nation's leading scorer (32.1 ppg), Clemons played a season-low 23 minutes and made 8-of-12 shots, including 2-of-3 threes and all four of his free throws for the Camels (4-3), who won their third in the last four games.   Gensler made 6-of-10 shots and grabbed seven rebounds in 22 minutes.  Brooks Cluxton came off the bench to score a career-high 9 points in 18 minutes.

CU scored the first 11 points of the game, led 38-15 at the half and opened the second period on a 24-2 run.  Campbell also set an arena mark for fewest points allowed in a half by limiting the Eagles to 14 in the final period.

Steven Branch came off the Trinity Baptist (3-5) bench to score eight points for the Eagles, who stand 0-3 against Division I opponents this season.

Campbell shot 48 percent (29-61) for the game, hit 10-of-27 threes (.370) and all 11 of its free throws. The Camels finished with a 44-29 edge on the boards and a 21-5 advantage in points off turnovers.

Trinity Baptist shot just 23 percent (12-52) from the floor, made 3-of-24 triples (.125) and 2-of-3 from the line.

Clemons extended his double figure scoring streak to 89 games, the longest active stretch in the nation, and tied with Mel Counts of Oregon State (1961-64) for fifth-longest in NCAA Division I history.

The 29 points allowed were nine fewer than the previous record of 38 scored by Johnson & Wales on Dec. 8, 2014.  The previous record for lowest scoring half by a Campbell opponent in the building (which opened in 2008) was 15 by Averett in 2012 and last January by Charleston Southern.

Campbell returns to action Tuesday in a 7:00 p.m. (CST) tip-off at Abilene Christian.
