Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Camels ease past Western Carolina for first win

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Campbell University women's basketball team won its road opener in convincing fashion Friday night as it handled Western Carolina, 63-37, at Ramsey Center.

The Fighting Camels trailed for just over a minute early in the first quarter before taking control of the game. The Catamounts cut Campbell's lead to four, 18-14, at the end of the first quarter, but Campbell took control from the second period on, outscoring WCU 45-23 over the final three quarters.

After shooting just 33 percent from the floor in Tuesday's setback to Old Dominion, the Campbell offense rebounded to shoot 43 percent including 9-of-20 (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc.

"I really like how our team responded to a tough loss Tuesday," said Campbell head coach Ronny Fisher. "When you get beat like that on your home court you find out a lot about your team and we really came to work for two days and tried to get better."

The game's leading scorer, Lauren McNamara-Clement, was 5-for-5 from the floor and hit on three timely 3-pointers to rack up 13 points.  She also finished one rebound shy of a double-double and figured into a major turning point in the game.

After the Catamounts took their only lead of the night three minutes into the game, McNamara-Clement put the Camels ahead for good, rattling off the game's next eight points—two 3s and a jumper—in a span of 1:08.

Kyra Davis chipped in nine points and Taya Bolden had eight in a balanced offensive outing that saw six Camels hit two or more field goals.

On the other end of the floor it was tough going for the Catamounts. Jewel Small's 12-point night was the lone bright spot in a game the saw Western convert on a mere 28.6 percent of its 49 shots.

"On the defensive end, I thought we made some good improvements," said Fisher.  "We had a lot of players that came in and played well. It's neat to see a team effort like that."

Campbell returns to action Thursday when it welcomes the College of Charleston to Gore Arena for a 7 p.m. game.
