CORAL GABLES, FLA. – Zach Johnson and Chris Lykes combined for 43 points to lead Miami to a 73-62 win over Campbell Saturday at the Watsco Center.
Johnson hit 5-of-6 threes and finished with a game-high 22 points, while Lykes added 21 for the Hurricanes (8-4), who won their third straight. Anthony Lawrence scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while DJ Vasiljevic chipped in 10 points for the Hurricanes, who made 12-of-24 threes and shot 54.5 percent from the floor overall.
Chris Clemons, who entered the game as the nation's leading scorer (30.5), finished with a season-low 19 points for Campbell (6-7), which shot just 35.9 percent from the floor against a taller Miami squad.
Andrew Eudy added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while
Ja'Cor Nelson came off the bench to chip in 14 points and make three steals.
Campbell hit just 6-of-32 (.188) beyond the arc on the day, but battled Miami nearly even on the glass. With three starters taller than any Camel player, the Hurricanes finished with only a 33-31 edge on the boards.
Miami used an early 14-0 run and hit 8-of-13 from long distance in the opening half to take a 37-26 lead at the break. Lykes scored 14 first-half points on 5-of-7 shooting (3-of-4 threes) and the Hurricanes made 58 percent of their shots before the break.
Clemons missed his first six shots before knocking down a corner three with 6:56 to play and finishing with seven points in the opening period. He extended his double-figure scoring streak to 95 games, the longest among all active players and 4th-best in NCAA Division I history. With 2617 points, Clemons moved by Calbert Chaney of Indiana (2613 from 1989-93) into 31st place on the D1 all-time scoring list.
Miami improved to 6-1 at home this season, while the Camels dropped to 0-4 in true road games.
The Camels host NAIA member Allen Wednesday (7 p.m.) before opening Big South Conference play next Saturday (Jan. 5) at home vs. Gardner-Webb.
