Three place at Midlands, Gonser takes runner-up

HOFFMAN ESTATES, ILL. – Noah Gonser finished runner-up, Andrew Morgan took fourth and unattached Jere Heino placed sixth, leading Campbell at the 56th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships.

The trio become the first Camels to place at the prestigious Midlands Championships.

Gonser made more history for the Camels on Sunday, becoming the first Campbell wrestler to advance to the Midlands finals. The redshirt junior, who already owned a piece of CU history heading into the day after securing a place, topped Iowa's Paul Glynn with a 1-0 decision to reach the 133 finals. Iowa's Austin Desanto, seeded second and ranked No. 11 in the country, claimed the 133 title with a 15-5 major decision.

Morgan stormed through three seeded opponents in the consolation bracket to reach Sunday's third place match. The redshirt junior topped Illinois' Carver James, seeded seventh, 3-2, then defeated No. 5 seed Ben Harvey of Army 8-5. After advancing over Wisconsin's Ryan Christensen, seeded fourth, Morgan fell 11-5 to No. 6 seed Brit Wilson from Northern Illinois in the 174 pound third place bout.

After going 3-0 on Saturday, heavyweight Jere Heino, wrestling unattached and seeded second, fell by sudden victory to unattached No. 3 seed Tanner Hall from Arizona State 3-1. Already locked into a place, Heino forfeited his final two matches, taking sixth place.

Campbell placed 10th in the team standings with 57.5 points, trailing Illinois' 65 points. Iowa took the team title with 184 points, followed by Northern Iowa at 119.5 points. Northwestern placed third with 110 points, followed by Wisconsin (97.5), Princeton (92.5), Arizona State (83), Fresno State (69.5) and Army (68).

Nathan Boston (141 pounds), Josh Heil (149), Quentin Perez (unattached-165) and Chris Kober (184) also registered multiple wins on Saturday.

Next up, the Camels will travel to the Franklin & Marshall Open on January 5.
