Lacrosse falls at Richmond in opener 16-5

RICHMOND, VA. – Kim Egizi scored five goals and assisted on three more to lead Richmond over visiting Campbell 16-5 Saturday at Robins Stadium, opening the 2018 season.

Mia Castagnero and Julia Schmuckler added four goals apiece for the Spiders (1-0), while Marissa Brown added two assists and a goal. Five different Camels (0-1) found the back of the net in their 2018 debut.

The Spiders built a 6-0 lead when Katie Trainer scored at the 6:10 mark after back to back Schmuckler goals in the first half.

Carter Koontz put Campbell on the board with 2:34 on the clock in the first, but the Spiders tacked on three before the half, including two more goals from Schmuckler, giving Richmond a 9-1 lead at the break.

Ellie Allen and Kayla Reilly opened the second stanza with back to back goals for the Camels, but Egizi (3) and Castagnero (2) combined for five straight scores for Richmond, extending the Spider lead to 14-3.

Mackenzie Koeller (11:17) and Melissa Placek (7:38) also added goals for Campbell in the second half.

Megan Reilly paced the Campbell defense with six ground balls and caused five turnovers in the loss.

Julie Ball led Richmond's backfield with five ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Megan Gianforte added 13 saves for the Spiders.

Next up for the Camels will be a trip to preseason No. 19 Duke on February 16. Campbell hosts East Carolina on February 24 at Barker-Lane Stadium.
