BUIES CREEK, N.C. – A 13-5 run over the final 2:39 lifted Campbell to a 63-55 victory over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday evening inside Gore Arena.
Summer Price led the Camels (15-13, 8-9) with 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting (41.7 percent).
MaKala Rouse scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists.
Gardner-Webb's (18-11, 8-9) offense was led by Alexus Hill's game-high 17 points on 6-of-12 (50 percent) shooting. Tierra Huntsman posted 12 points, grabbed nine boards and recorded three assists for the visitors.
With the victory, Campbell is in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Big South standings along with Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, which defeated UNC Asheville in overtime on Tuesday.
With 2:39 remaining and the score tied at 50-50, Campbell used an 12-1 run to reach its largest lead of 11, 62-51, with 18 ticks remaining. Five different Camels led the outburst, as CU secured the season sweep over Gardner-Webb.
The visitors led for just 1:56 in Tuesday's contest and never led by more than one possession, reaching its largest lead of two early in the first quarter.
A 9-3 run gave Campbell the 44-38 lead late in the third quarter, before Gardner-Webb responded to even things at 44-44 early in the fourth. CU pulled ahead by six again, but GWU responded to equalize before Campbell's game-clinching stretch.
Campbell led by as many as six in the first half, 24-18, with 4:38 left in the second quarter after a
Sarah Smith 3-pointer. The Runnin' Bulldogs responded with a 10-3 run to close the half with a 28-27 advantage.
Hill led all scorers with 11 points in the first half, while Price scored seven to lead Campbell scorers.
Hayley Barber scored six and Smith added five in the opening half for CU.
The Camels dominated the paint, holding a 22-12 advantage.
Ashlyn Hampton and
Hannah Long scored six each and Smith added five off the bench as CU posted a 13-point advantage, 22-9, in bench points.
Campbell shot 42.9 percent (21-49) from the floor, edging Gardner-Webb, which shot 37.5 percent (21-56). The Camels were strong on the boards all night, outrebounding the Runnin' Bulldogs, 42-24.
Campbell heads to Radford for the regular season finale on Saturday at 2 p.m.
