BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Morgan Hollenbeck led a second half comeback with five goals in the period, but Coastal Carolina held off Campbell 14-9 Wednesday at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Coastal (1-1) led 12-2 at the 23:42 mark in the second, with Courtney Genovese's third goal of the game.
Hollenbeck answered for the Camels (1-4) with 22:06 on the clock, her first as a Camel, and followed with another 4:16 later.
Mackenzie Koeller made it three straight for the Camels (13:13) before back to back Coastal scores from Genovese restored the Chanticleer lead to nine at 14-5.
Campbell closed the game with four consecutive goals, including three more from Hollenbeck, plus
Melissa Placek's second of the day, cutting the CCU lead to 14-5 with 2:06 remaining, but Coastal would hold on for the road win.
Campbell led 2-1 after
Sarah Paul's free position strike with 25:38 on the clock in the first, but Coastal answered with 11 straight goals, including 10 to end the first half to go up 12-2.
Coastal netted all five of its first half free position shots, and converted five of its six clear attempts, while limiting Campbell to just one clear of its first six tries.
Genovese paced Coastal with a team-high five goals, while Haley Kyger chipped in three assists. Haley Alexander also posted two goals and an assist for the Chanticleers.
Harley Barrett collected 13 saves on 26 Campbell shots in goal, while Sophie Crowther picked up three ground balls and caused a turnover.
Coming into the game without a goal on the season, Hollenbeck erupted for five scores to lead Campbell on the offensive end, adding two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Annie Pazulski and
Kayla Reilly tacked on two assists each.
Amanda Chasin registered six ground balls and caused four turnovers for the Camels.
Carter Koontz also picked up five ground balls in the loss.
The Camels will head on the road next week, traveling to Butler (March 6) and Cincinnati (March 8). Campbell returns home on March 14, hosting George Mason.
