BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Camels put up five runs in the bottom of the first but were held scoreless over the final eight innings as Campbell fell to Canisius 9-5 Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.
Jared Kennedy (1-0) was credited with the win, pitching 5.0 scoreless innings of relief for the Golden Griffins. The junior lefty struck out seven Camel batters and allowed just two hits on the night.
Wyatt Tyson (0-1) was dealt the loss, surrendering two runs over 0.1 innings pitched in the top of the fifth. Campbell starter
Wes Noble went 4.0 innings with five strikeouts, giving up four earned runs.
Christian Jones (2-for-5, 3 RBI) posted his first home run of the season, sending a three-run shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the first.
Luis Gimenez (2-for-5) collected two singles on the night and has notched at least one hit in the first three games of his Campbell career.
Campbell (3-6) got the bats going early, scoring five runs in the first on three hits and one error.
Matthew Barefoot (1-for-3) led off with a single, then
Tyler Anshaw and
Zach Minnick reached on back-to-back walks. With the bases loaded, true freshman
Ty Babin (1-for-4, 2 RBI) singled to left field to score Barefoot and Anshaw. On the next at-bat, Jones crushed a 1-2 pitch to left for a three-run homer to put the Camels up 5-0.
Canisius (6-2) scored nine in a row to claim their sixth-straight win, including a six-run top of the fifth that saw 12 Golden Griffins step up to the plate. Christ Conley (0-for-3, 2 SF) and Conner Morro (1-for-4) led the way with two RBI each, while William Krull (1-for-5) tallied his second home run of the year.
