Camels fall to No. 14 Duke 4-0

Campbell was shut out for just the second time this season.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – No. 14 Duke struck out 17 Campbell batters on the way to a 4-0 win Tuesday night at Jim Perry Stadium. All four runs scored by the Blue Devils were unearned.

Duke (17-4, 4-2 ACC) put up three runs in the top of the sixth after Campbell (10-11, 3-0 Big South) committed a throwing error with two outs on the board. With the bases loaded, a Campbell miscue allowed Jimmy Herron (2-for-4) to score and give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead. On the next at-bat, Joey Loperfido (2-for-4, 2 RBI) sent a two-RBI single up the middle to make it 3-0.

The Blue Devils scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth, as a sac fly scored Chris Proctor (0-for-3) who had advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt.

Sophomore lefty Graeme Stinson (2-0) earned the win, holding the Camels to one hit over 3.0 relief innings and collecting a team-high nine strikeouts. Starting right-hander Bryce Jarvis notched 4 K's through 3.0 innings, while right-handed reliever Ethan DeCaster also had four strikeouts across 2.0 innings of work.

Redshirt senior Allan Winans (2-3) took the loss despite a quality start, tossing 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts and no earned runs. Tyson Messer and Matthew Barefoot posted two strikeouts, while Jack Yusko notched one K in his relief appearance.

The Camels were held to four singles on the night. Leadoff man Luis Gimenez finished 1-for-4, while third baseman Tyler Anshaw (1-for-3), designated hitter Jeff Hahs (1-for-4) and right fielder Joe Zirolli (1-for-3) each collected a hit. Matthew Barefoot reached base on a walk and an HBP to extend his current on-base streak to 22 games.

Campbell returns to action this weekend with a home Big South series against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs. The three-game set is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, March 23-25 at Jim Perry Stadium.
