CU falls at league leader Winthrop

Dustin Werner claimed Campbell's only point and has now claimed seven straight singles victories

Rock Hill, S.C. ­- Dustin Werner claimed Campbell's only point as the Camels fell to Winthrop, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.
 
Winthrop (7-6, 4-0 Big South) won two out of three matchups on the doubles side and claimed the first three singles points to clinch the win for the league leaders. Campbell (9-5, 3-1 Big South) now sits one win out of first place in the Big South conference standings behind Winthrop and Liberty who sport a perfect 4-0 conference record.
 
Dustin Werner picked up his seventh straight win with a 6-2, 6-4 two set win over Leandros Pappayiannis at No. 3. Werner's win was Campbell only victory on the singles side as the junior improved his overall record to 9-3 and now sports a 4-0 undefeated mark in Big South play. After his win on Sunday, the German holds a perfect 6-0 record at No. 3 to lead the conference at the respective court. Over his past seven wins, Werner has claimed five out of seven matchups in just two sets and has not lost since he fell against UNCG's Marcus Vidgren on February 9.
 
Gerard Sola and Jonathan O'Neal claimed Campbell's only other win on the day with a 6-4 decision over Connor Williamson and Aditya Gokhale at No. 2. The win notched the duo's fifth consecutive win in doubles action. With their win, the pair evened their overall record at 6-6 and now boast a 3-1 record in Big South action as well as a 5-3 mark at No. 2 on the season.
 
Campbell has a quick turnaround as it travels to Greensboro, N.C. to take on UC Riverside for their second match in as many days. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m.
 
Campbell enters the match with wins in six of its last seven matches and have claimed seven of its last nine appearances.
 
UC Riverside enters Monday's matchup with the Camels with a 9-11 overall record. The Highlanders will also take on North Carolina A&T Monday morning at 9 a.m. before taking on Campbell later in the day.
