Asheville tops Camels 47-42 in Big South quarters

3rd-seeded Bulldogs rally late to advance

LYNCHBURG, VA. – UNC Asheville closed the game on a 9-1 run and defeated Campbell 47-42 Friday night in the Big South Conference Championship quarterfinal round at the Vines Center.

Bronaza Fitzgerald scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Khaila Webb added 13 points for the third-seeded Bulldogs (16-14), who made 5-of-9 shots in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Hayley Barber scored a season-high nine points to lead the sixth-seeded Camels (15-15), who went the final 6:00 without a field goal.

Campbell led by as many as 10 in the first half before Asheville closed the period on a 9-0 burst and trimmed the Camel lead to 25-22 at intermission.

Asheville took its largest lead thanks to a 10-1 flurry and pushed the margin to 34-29 on Fitzgerald's short bank shot with 5:29 remaining.

The Camels responded with a 12-4 burst and Summer Price's three put CU ahead 41-38 with 6:19 remaining.  However, CU went 0-of-5 from the floor down the stretch against the defending Big South tournament champs.

Zip Scott's short jumper cut the gap to 41-40 with 5:55 to go, then she knocked down a triple to put the Bulldogs in front for good (43-41) with 4:49 remaining.

Campbell entered the contest third in the country in scoring defense (52.0) and held the Bulldogs to 39 percent shooting from the field.

"It was a tough one to lose," said Campbell head coach Ronny Fisher. "I thought the effort was great and we won all the hustle categories. It just came down to we just couldn't get the ball in the basket in the second half. We had some good looks inside and out, but they just didn't fall."

The Camels shot 28 percent from the field (14-50), made 7-of-18 threes and finished with a 12-7 edge in second-chance points.
