Rock Hill, S.C. - Dustin Werner claimed his 13
th straight singles win and clinched at No. 2 as Campbell defeated Gardner-Webb 4-1 to advance to the Big South Men's Tennis Championship match for the fourth time in five seasons.
Dustin claimed yet another two-set win with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Big South Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Conference Singles selection Millen Hurrion at No. 2. This marks Werner's second win in a row at No. 2 after a 6-3, 6-4 win yesterday. The German played primarily at No. 3 all year where he did not drop a single match. The Big South Scholar Athlete of the Year, now holds a 15-3 overall record and has not lost a singles matchup since February 9.
Campbell opened the match by clinching the doubles point for the second day in a row.
Gerard Sola and
Jonathan O'Neal kicked things off with a 6-3 win at No. 2 before
Dustin Werner and
Lorenz Schwab clinched the doubles point for the Camels with a 6-3 decision over First Team All-Conference Doubles pair Maximilian Scholl and Millen Hurrion. The duo has now won three in a row and hold a 10-4 mark at No. 1 as a part of an 11-4 overall record.
After claiming the doubles point,
Gerard Sola won his seventh straight singles appearance with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Stefano Puga at No. 5 to put the Camels up 2-0.. The junior now holds a 13-7 overall record and has now hit double digits in the win column at No. 5 with a 10-2 record.
Lukas Schaefer then put the Camels up 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 over Adam Schmidt. The win marked the German's sixth straight singles win and improved his overall record to 11-4 on the season including a 10-3 mark at No. 4.
Big South First Team All-Conference Singles selection Maximilian Scholl secured a two-set win at No. 1 before the Camels clinched the match. Campbell also claimed a 4-1 win on Monday against UNC Asheville.
Campbell will take on No. 1 seeded Winthrop in the championship match set for tomorrow, April 18. The title match is set to begin at 2:00 and will be held by host school, Winthrop, at the Rock Hill Tennis Center. Last season, Campbell claimed the runner-up spot in the Big South Championship but will look to take home the Big South Tournament title for the first time since 1992 against the Eagles on Wednesday.
