Rock Hill, S.C. - With the match tied, 3-3,
Ted Williams clinched the match at No. 6 as Campbell defeated Winthrop 4-3 to claim the 2018 Big South Men's Tennis Championship title.
The win marks the Camels' first Big South Conference title since 1992 and marks the program's first ever birth to the NCAA Tournament.
Campbell never trailed but the match came down to court No. 6 between
Ted Williams and Joshua Ryan. Williams claimed the first set 7-5 before being blanked in the second 6-0. In the decisive third set, the freshman claimed a 7-6 (7-5) tie-breaking win to clinch the match and the conference title and to collect his third win in a row.
Campbell opened play by clinching the doubles point for the third consecutive day.
Louis Monterosso and
Lukas Schaefer paired to secure a 6-4 win at No. 3 for their sixth straight win.
Gerard Sola and
Jonathan O'Neal then clinched the doubles point for the Camels with a 6-4 win at No. 2 for their third win in a row.
First Team All-Conference Singles selection Diego Quiroz evened things at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 to open singles action.
Lukas Schaefer then put the Camels back on top, 2-1, with a two set 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4. The win marked his seventh straight singles victory and his fourth straight two set win.
Campbell dropped its second consecutive matchup as Gabriel Dias picked up a two set 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 to even the match, 2-2.
The final three matches to finish came down to the third and final set.
Ondrej Labik put the Camels one point away from clinching with a 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (5-6) win to give the Camels a 3-2 lead. After winning 13 straight matches,
Dustin Werner fell in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 5-7 to even things back at 3-3 and force the final decision at court six where
Ted Williams won it for the Camels.
With Campbell's win over Winthrop, the Camels receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 2018 NCAA Men's Team Tournament begins on Friday, May 18 with seeding for the NCAA Tournament to be released at a later date.
