Camels top Lancers 8-4 Friday night

With the win, Campbell owns a 5-1 record in Big South series openers this season.

FARMVILLE, Va. – Redshirt senior Allan Winans tossed his seventh quality start of the season as Campbell took down Longwood 8-4 Friday night at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium.

A native of Bakersfield, Calif., Winans (4-4) earned the win as he threw 6.2 innings with two earned runs on eight hits. The right-hander collected five strikeouts and gave up just two walks across 30 batters faced.

Campbell reliever Phil Simpson earned his first save of the season, tossing the final two outs of the game. The lefty from Holly Springs, N.C. dealt a pickoff and a swinging strikeout to end the game and seal the victory for the Camels.

Longwood's Steven Farkas (2-7) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits over six complete frames.

Redshirt sophomore outfielder Matthew Barefoot (2-for-5, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI) posted an impressive line for the Camels, collecting two extra-base hits and driving in a team-high three runs on the night. Additionally, senior designated hitter Jeff Hahs (1-for-6, R, RBI) cranked a solo bomb for his first home run of the 2018 campaign.

Campbell (21-17, 13-3 Big South) jumped out to an early lead with a four spot in the top of the second. With runners on second and third, Kyle Mehl (0-for-2, 2 R, RBI) laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that brought Minnick home. After a throwing error by the Longwood first baseman, Tyler Anshaw (1-for-2, 2B) came all the way around from second to give the Camels a 2-0 lead. Barefoot capped off the big inning with a two-RBI double down the left field line, scoring Mehl and Bryce Myers (0-for-2, 2 R, RBI) to make it 4-0.

Longwood (13-23, 6-10 Big South) scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, as Grant Keller (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) roped an RBI double to left field to cut the Campbell lead to 4-1.

Hahs led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run to put the Camels up 5-1. The senior from O'Fallon, Ill. crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for his first homer of the season and 11th as a Camel.

Campbell added to its lead with a run in the top of the seventh. After Lancer reliever Todd Moxey loaded the bases with three HBP, Myers drew an RBI walk to bring Zach Minnick (1-for-2, 2 R) home and make it a 6-1 lead for the Camels.

The Lancers posted their second run of the night in the bottom of the seventh. First baseman Justin Mitchell (2-for-4, R, RBI) drove pinch runner Jake Jansen home on a single to left field that brought the Campbell lead down to 6-2.

CU plated two runs in the top of the ninth. After Mehl stole third base, the senior infielder came home on a throwing error by Longwood catcher Joey Mendez (0-for-0, R). Barefoot drove Campbell's final run of the game in on a sac fly to left field, scoring Myers to put the Camels up 8-2.

Longwood sparked a rally in the bottom of the ninth, plating two runs on a two-RBI single through the left side from second baseman Nate Blakeney (3-for-5, 2 RBI) to cut the lead to 8-4. With one out and runners on first and second, Simpson entered the game and recorded a pickoff and a strikeout to end the game.

The Camels, who entered the game leading the league in HBP, were collectively hit by seven pitches Friday night. That mark ties for the sixth-most in a single game by any NCAA Division I team this season.

Campbell goes for the series win over Longwood Saturday, April 21 at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
