WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW put up 14 runs on 18 hits as Campbell dropped a midweek matchup to the Seahawks 14-4 Wednesday night at Brooks Field.
Junior righty Blake Deatherage (1-0) was credited with the win, tossing a predetermined 2.0 complete innings as the UNCW starter. The Burlington, N.C. native faced one above the minimum, allowing no runs, no hits and striking out two for his first-career win.
Campbell's
Wes Noble (4-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits across 3.0 innings pitched.
Redshirt-senior outfielder
Bryce Myers (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) led the Camels offensively with two extra-base hits, including a three-run homer that accounted for CU's first runs of the night. Designated hitter
Ty Babin (2-for-4, RBI) also had a multi-hit effort with two singles for the Camels.
The Seahawks collected eight extra-base hits, including two home runs from right fielder Kep Brown (4-for-5, 2 HR, 2 RBI) as well as one homer apiece from Ryan Jeffers (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) and Greg Jones (2-for-4, 2B, 4 RBI).
UNCW (25-15) scored first, plating a run in the bottom of the second inning. Jones – who led the frame off with a double to deep left field – came home on a 6-4-3 double play groundout by third baseman Cole Weiss (1-for-4, R).
The Seahawks busted the game open with a four spot in the bottom of the third. With runners on first and second, Jones sent the 2-0 offering from Noble over the right center field wall for a three-run jack. On the next at-bat, Brown cranked the first pitch he saw deep to left field for a solo homer that put the Seahawks up 5-0.
Wilmington put three more on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Center fielder Noah Bridges (4-for-5, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI) scored on a wild pitch before Jeffers roped a two-RBI double down the left field line to score Zack Canada (2-for-5, R) and Jackson Meadows (0-for-3, R).
UNCW added four to its lead in the fifth, as Brown led off the frame with another solo home run to left field. Bridges drove two runners in on a double to the right center gap, before Jones was hit by a pitch to score Bridges and give the Seahawks a 12-0 advantage.
Campbell (23-18) got on the board in the top of the seventh, as Myers belted a three-run bomb for his sixth home run of the season. The redshirt senior from Chesapeake, Va. drove in Babin and
Kyle Mehl (0-for-3, R) – who reached on a single and HBP, respectively – to make it 12-3.
Jeffers crushed a two-run shot in the seventh as the Seahawks went up 14-3. Hampstead, N.C. native
Bryce Cota entered the game for Campbell and struck out the side to get the Camels out of the seventh.
The Camels plated the final run of the night as
DJ Gatz (1-for-2),
Jonathan D'Ercole (1-for-1),
Tyler Anshaw (1-for-3) and Babin posted four-consecutive singles. Babin's was scored an RBI infield hit as the sharply hit grounder could not be contained by the UNCW shortstop. Gatz crossed the plate to make it 14-4 for the game's final score.
Campbell returns to action Wednesday, May 2 for a midweek contest at consensus top-five NC State. First pitch between the Camels and Wolfpack is slated for 6 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park in Raleigh, N.C.
