BOONE, N.C. - It came down to the final matchup and
Lukas Schaefer clinched the win at No. 4 as Campbell defeated Appalachian State 4-3 Friday afternoon at Varsity Courts.
Campbell (12-5, 4-1 Big South) trailed 3-2 after Appalachian State (10-10) claimed the doubles point and notched two singles victories before a pair of Campbell seniors reeled off two consecutive victories to lift the Camels over App. State.
Lorenz Schwab clutched out a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2 over Milo Bergeron to force the decisive matchup at No. 4.
In the final matchup at No. 4,
Lukas Schaefer dropped the first set 7-6 (7-5) before rallying off two straight set wins over Alex Pavkovich 6-1, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Camels who are winners in nine of their last ten matches. The win marks the German's third consecutive singles win and now sports a 7-3 mark at No. 4.
Gerard Sola opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 for his third straight win. The Spaniard has now claimed wins in eight of his last ten appearances and holds a record of 6-2 at No. 5 where he leads the Big South Conference at his respective court.
Dustin Werner clinched the Camels' other singles point on the day with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 where he has been a staple all season. With the win, the German picked up his ninth straight win to push his overall singles record to 10-3 on the year. Over his last 10 appearances, the junior has a 9-1 record to help lead the Camels to solid outings over the last month.
Campbell's only win in doubles action came from
Louis Monterosso and
Lukas Schaefer who secured a 6-3 decision at No. 3 over Alex Brea and Campbell Stone. The duo now sits at 6-2 on the season and has won three consecutive appearances.
The Camels stay in the mountains as they head to UNC Asheville on Sunday for their final road match of the regular season. First serve against the Bulldogs is set for 10:00 a.m. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved back to avoid rainy conditions.
