Werner wins 10th straight, CU tops UNCA 4-3

With a Campbell win over Liberty and a Winthrop loss to Presbyterian, Campbell could move into the top spot in the Big South standings.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ­- Dustin Werner claimed his 10th consecutive singles win and Campbell defeated UNC Asheville, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.
                    
Werner claimed yet another two-set victory with a 6-4, 7-5 decision over Olly Cull at No. 3. Over his 10-match win streak, the German has claimed seven of the matchups in just two sets. He is now a perfect 9-0 on the season at No. 3 where he ranks first in the conference in both overall results and conference action alone. In conference play, the junior has posted an unblemished 6-0 mark and has only dropped three total matchups on the season as a part of a 12-3 record.
 
Three other Camels improved their win streaks in singles play Sunday afternoon as well as one doubles pair.
 
Lukas Schaefer picked up his fourth straight victory with a 6-3, 6-2 two set decision over Edward Colclough at No. 4. The German has posted an impressive 8-3 mark at No. 4 and holds a 3-3 record in conference play.
 
Gerard Sola defended his league leading record at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over James Massie. The Vic, Spain native has now won four in a row and holds his league leading 7-2 mark at No. 5. Overall the junior sports a 10-7 record on the season to go along with his 4-2 mark in conference play.
 
Lorenz Schwab picked up his third win in a row with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Oli Nolan at No. 2. Schwab also claimed a win in Campbell's last match to force the decisive final set and eventual win. Schwab now holds a 9-7 overall record including a nearly perfect 5-1 record in conference action.
 
On the doubles side, Louis Monterosso and Lukas Schaefer picked up the Camels only doubles victory of the day with a 6-3 win at No. 3. The victory marked the duo's fourth straight and pushed their record to 7-2 overall and a 4-1 mark in Big South play.
 
Campbell closes out the regular season schedule on Thursday as it welcomes Liberty to Buies Creek for a 2:00 p.m. start time before heading to the Big South Conference Tournament which is scheduled for April 16-18. With a Campbell win over Liberty and a Winthrop loss to Presbyterian, Campbell could move into the top spot in the Big South standings.
