Camels fly past Eagles 6-1, claim series opener

Campbell plated two runs in the first and never looked back as CU defeated Winthrop Friday night.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Allan Winans posted another dominant performance on the mound, striking out 11 batters over seven innings of work as Campbell opened up the series with a 6-1 win over the Winthrop Eagles Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

Winans, a redshirt senior from Bakersfield, Calif., improved his record to 6-4 on the season with his ninth quality start of the year. The right-handed pitcher tossed 7.0 innings of one-run ball, giving up five hits with two walks and 11 K's.

Campbell reliever Logan Bender finished out the game with two scoreless frames, adding two strikeouts and forcing two double-play ground balls.

Winthrop righty Nate Pawelczyk (6-5) took the loss, giving up five earned runs on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Senior outfielder Jeff Hahs (3-for-4, 3 R, HR, RBI) posted his third three-hit outing of the season, including a solo opposite-field home run in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Anshaw (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Zach Minnick (1-for-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI) led the Camels with two RBI apiece.

Campbell (28-20, 18-4 Big South) jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. After Luis Gimenez (1-for-3, R) and Hahs reached on back-to-back singles, Anshaw lined a hit into left field to score both runners.

Winthrop (22-26, 13-9 Big South) cut CU's lead in half with its only run in the top of the second. Tyler Halstead (1-for-3, R) led the inning off with a double that bounced off of third base, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a 4-3 groundout from Cale Gibson (2-for-4, RBI).

The Camels extended their lead to 5-1 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. With Christian Jones (0-for-4, R) and Hahs on second and third, Minnick drove a two-out double deep into the left center gap to plate two runs. The junior catcher from Logan, W.Va. went on to score following two wild pitches from Pawelczyk.

Hahs put the exclamation point on Friday's win with a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth. The O'Fallon, Ill. native launched the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for his fifth home run in the last 11 games.

With 13 K's Friday night, Campbell's pitching staff has racked up 441 strikeouts this season, breaking the all-time program record of 432 set in 2012.

Campbell goes for the series win over Winthrop, Saturday, May 12, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Jim Perry Stadium. For the most up-to-date information on Campbell baseball, follow @GoCamelsBSB on Twitter.
