Camels drop series opener at Radford 3-2

Matthew Barefoot’s early two-run shot scored Campbell’s only runs of the day.

RADFORD, Va. – The Fighting Camels could not overcome an early 3-0 deficit as the Radford Highlanders defeated Campbell 3-2 Thursday afternoon at the Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium.
 
Campbell drops to 29-23 on the year with a 19-6 mark in conference play, while Radford improves to 24-28 overall with a 14-11 record in league action.
 
Highlander righty Austin Ross (9-4) picked up his conference-leading ninth win of the season, tossing 3.0 innings with two earned runs on two hits. The redshirt senior was on a pitch count Thursday afternoon as he collected three strikeouts and one walk.
 
Senior right-hander Wes Noble (6-6) was credited with the loss, giving up one earned run over one complete inning as the Campbell starter.

Matthew Barefoot (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) drove in both of Campbell's runs with a two-run shot in the top of the third. It was Barefoot's sixth homer of the season, tying Bryce Myers for the second-most on the team.
 
Campbell relievers Bryce Cota, Jack Yusko, Jamil Vanheyningen, Andrew Witczak and Tyson Messer combined for six scoreless frames against the Highlanders. Witczak and Yusko added three strikeouts to their season totals, while Vanheyningen tossed a season-long 2.1 innings with just one base runner allowed on a walk.
 
Radford got in front early with one run in the bottom of the first. After Luke Wise (1-for-4, R) roped a leadoff double to right center and moved over on a groundout, Spencer Horwitz (2-for-4, RBI) knocked him in on a single to left field.
 
The Highlanders scored two in the bottom of the second to triple their lead to 3-0. With runners on second and third, Radford plated one on an RBI groundout from Richard De La Cruz (0-for-4, RBI) before Kyle Butler (1-for-3, RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk.
 
Barefoot cut the Radford lead to one with a two-run bomb in the top of the third, scoring Kyle Mehl (1-for-2, R) who led off with an HBP.
 
Radford reliever Andrew Nardi kept the Camels off the board for 4.0 innings, including a sequence where the junior lefty struck out eight of nine batters faced. RU's Kyle Palmer earned the save, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings to close it out.
