Flames down Camels 10-5 in Friday opener

No. 1 seed Campbell and No. 3 seed Liberty will rematch Friday night in a Big South Tournament elimination game.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty Flames scored five runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach, defeating Campbell 10-5 to force a seven-inning elimination game against the Fighting Camels in the third round of the Big South Championship.

Campbell and Liberty will rematch Friday evening, May 25 at the Liberty Baseball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 45 minutes after the completion of Game 12 of the tournament. The winner of Friday's 7-inning bout will advance to Saturday's winner-take-all championship game.

Zach Clinton (7-5) picked up the win as the Liberty starter, tossing five innings with four earned runs. Reliever Jackson Bertsch earned his third save of the year as he threw the final 4.0 innings for the Flames.

Junior right-hander Michael Horrell (6-4) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits over 3.2 innings of work. The Thomasville, N.C. native finished with three walks and two strikeouts.

Matthew Barefoot (3-for-4, 3 R) collected three singles to lead the Camels offensively. The redshirt sophomore from Dunn, N.C. has logged three hits in three of his last four games, hitting 10-for-17 (.588) over that stretch.

Christian Jones added four RBI to his season total of 61, a mark that leads the Big South. A senior infielder from Jacksonville, Fla., Jones roped a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the third before picking his fourth RBI of the day on a sac fly in the fifth.

Liberty (32-25) got on the board first with three runs on three hits in the top of the second. Ayden Karraker (1-for-4, 2 R, 3 RBI) plated two on a single to center field before D.J. Artis (2-for-4, RBI) drove him in on another single to right.

The Flames extended their lead to 4-0 in the third, as Logan Mathieu (1-for-3, 2 R, RBI)) drove a single to left center that scored Tyler Galazin (0-for-4, R, RBI) from second.

Campbell (33-24) cut the Liberty lead to 4-3 with a bases-clearing double to left center from Jones in the bottom of the third. Kyle Mehl (0-for-3, R), Barefoot and Jeff Hahs (1-for-2, R, RBI) crossed the plate as all three reached on walks from Clinton.

Liberty added a run in the top of the fourth when Galazin came home on a bases-loaded wild pitch from reliever Wyatt Tyson, putting the Flames up 5-3.

Jones pulled the Camels within one with a line drive to deep left field that was hauled in by Karraker, allowing Barefoot to come home on the sac fly.

The Flames put the game away with a five-spot in the top of the seventh. Three Campbell relievers combined for four walks and two hit by pitch in the inning as Liberty took a commanding 10-5 lead.

Campbell plated the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout from Hahs. Neither team scored over the final two frames, as freshman righty Jamil Vanheyningen allowed just two base runners across the eighth and ninth.

Up next, Campbell will rematch with Liberty Friday, May 25 at Liberty Baseball Stadium. The 7-inning game is slated for 45 minutes after Game 12 (High Point vs. Gardner-Webb) and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
