Camels drop midweek opener at Ohio State 10-6

CU was held off the board over the final seven innings after taking an early 6-2 lead on the Buckeyes.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Fighting Camels were held scoreless by the Ohio State bullpen over the final seven frames as the Buckeyes went on to win 10-6 Tuesday night at Bill Davis Stadium.

OSU reliever Austin Woodby (3-0) was credited with the win, as the redshirt-senior righty tossed two complete frames with two hits and one strikeout. Right-handed sidearm pitcher Kyle Michalik threw 4.0 innings for the Buckeyes, retiring 12-straight Camel batters while collecting three punch-outs.

Campbell's Wyatt Tyson (2-2) took the loss, allowing one earned run and three walks over 0.2 innings of work.

Harry Thomas was solid for the Camels in relief, giving up no runs over 3.2 frames while racking up a season-high six strikeouts Tuesday night.

Senior outfielder Jeff Hahs (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI) roped two RBI-doubles to lead the Camels offensively. Christian Jones (1-for-3, R, 2B, RBI) and Joe Zirolli (1-for-3, R 2B) each tallied extra-base hits for CU, while Matthew Barefoot (2-for-4, 2 R) and Zach Minnick (2-for-4) logged multi-hit performances with two singles apiece.

Campbell (26-20) got off to a hot start with two runs on four hits in the top of the first. Barefoot blooped the first pitch of the game into left field for a leadoff single, then snagged second for his Big South-leading 25th stolen base of the year. Hahs roped an RBI double down the left field line before Jones drove him in on a two-bagger to the left center gap to wrap up a two-run first for CU.

Ohio State (31-15) responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game. After Barefoot gave up three-straight walks as the starting pitcher, Thomas entered the game and allowed an RBI single for Dillon Dingler (1-for-4, R, RBI) before surrendering a bases-loaded walk to tie it up, 2-2.

The Camels scored four more in the second to go up 6-2 on the Buckeyes. After Zirolli led the frame off with a double and advanced to third on a balk, Luis Gimenez (0-for-3, RBI) sent a sac fly to right field to retake the lead for CU. Hahs followed with his second RBI double, scoring Barefoot on a drive to deep left center. After Minnick reached on an infield single, an errant throw by the OSU third baseman allowed Hahs and Jones to come home and make it a four-run lead over Ohio State.

The Buckeyes tied it up again with a four-run fifth on four hits and an error. With no outs on the board, left fielder Tyler Cowles (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI) and pinch hitter Andrew Fishel (1-for-1, RBI) notched back-to-back RBI singles before Jacob Barnwell (1-for-4, RBI) drove a run in on a rare 3-6-1 double play groundout. Noah West (1-for-4, RBI) capped off the big inning with an RBI single to center to make it a 6-6 ballgame.

OSU took the lead on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh. After the bases were loaded on three-straight walks, Fishel came home on a throw that made it to the backstop to give the Buckeyes a 7-6 edge.

Ohio State scored three in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away. Conner Pohl (2-for-3, RBI) and Cowles posted RBI doubles before Barnwell knocked an RBI single to center field to wrap up the scoring Tuesday night.

Pinch hitter DJ Gatz (1-for-1) led off the top of the ninth with a single to left center, but the Buckeyes picked up back-to-back strikeouts before a groundout to first ended the game.
