Campbell tops SC State 4-1 to open the season

Alexa Genas netted two of Campbell's four goals on the night

WILSON, N.C. - Alexa Genas netted two goals and Kylee Arno and Shannon Wratchford added one a piece as Campbell defeated South Carolina State 4-1 in the regular season opener at the Gillette Soccer Complex Friday night.

Jamey Thomas netted the Bulldog's (0-1) sole goal of the night on a header that was played in by Brandy Vaca on a corner kick.

Three of Campbell's goals came in the first half and the Camels (1-0) outshot the Bulldogs 16-6 to remain undefeated against South Carolina State in the all-time series.

Genas found the back of the net twice on the night. In the fourth minute, Kylee Arno broke past a defender and kept the ball inbounds to play it in to Rosie O'Neal who found Alexa Genas for the goal from eight yards out. Genas then was fouled in the box to force a penalty kick in the 13th minute before firing the PK for her final goal of the night.

Kylee Arno took the throw in and cut past two defenders before firing a shot from the left side for her first goal of the season in the 11th minute.

Emma Bushee played the ball in to Shannon Wratchford from just outside the box on the right side. Wratchford headed the ball into the net amongst multiple Bulldog defenders for the Camels' final goal of the night.

Campbell split time between all three goal keepers throughout the match. Erin Scott picked up the only save of the night for the Camels over 45 minutes of action.

The Camels outshot the Bulldogs 16-4 and were on target six times. Three of Campbell's four goals came off assists. Rosie O'Neal, Emma Bushee, and Kylee Arno all set up goals for the Camels.

"I'm really proud of the girls. They did a good job of setting the tone early" second year head coach Samar Azem said. "We have a long way to go and we have a lot of work to do but I think our girls have the right mindset and they're really excited about it."

Campbell heads to Appalachian State on Sunday for their next match. The contest is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
