8th-ranked SMU defeats Campbell 4-0

2nd-straight loss to 2017 NCAA tournament participant

DALLAS, TEXAS – Eddie Munjoma scored twice to lead eighth-ranked SMU to a 4-0 victory over visiting Campbell Sunday night at Westcott Field.

Emil Cuello dealt two assists for the Mustangs (1-1), who scored three times in the opening 30:42 then withstood a Camel flurry early in the second half.

SMU's three first-half scores all came off set pieces, following a long throw-in, corner kick and free kick.

The Camels came away from the SMU Tournament winless in two outings against a pair of teams that advanced to last year's NCAA postseason.  UIC, which edged the Camels 2-1 Friday, went on to win the event following a 3-0 win over Providence Sunday.  SMU advanced to the third round of last season's College Cup.

"It was good that we were able to come away and bond as a team. No one's happy about the results, but the next step is to really focus on playing our best stuff for Saturday in our home opener against Belmont," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder.

Camel keeper Matt Karasinski twice left his feet for diving saves in the opening 10 minutes before SMU scored.

Garrett McLaughlin's long throw into the box was sent along by Talen Maples to the far post where Munjoma finished with his right foot in the 14th minute

Just over four minutes later Maples headed in Cuello's corner at the near post to double the Mustang lead.

JJ Donnelly nearly cut the margin in half in the 22nd minute on a volley in the box, but 6-foot-4 SMU keeper Grant Makela reacted to tip the ball over his crossbar.

In the 31st minute, McLaughlin, a 2017 All-American who is on the MAC Hermann Award preseason watch list, volleyed home Cuello's restart service and the Mustangs led 3-0 at the break.

Following intermission, Campbell (0-2) twice threatened without reward.  Bastien Oberli's 47th minute corner kick was cleared by not away and Aigbekan Nosegbe hit a heavy, right-footed shot from 22 yards that beat Makela, but not the crossbar.

After 50 minutes, James dribbled by Maples in the box and the SMU back pulled down the Camel freshman for a CU penalty kick.  Makela, however, dove to save James' spot kick and keep his sheet clean.

Munjoma netted his second goal of the night in the 75th minute off Nicky Hernandez' serve for the final margin.

SMU finished with a 14-9 edge in shots, 9-2 in attempts on target, while Campbell took seven corners to five for the hosts.  Makela finished with two saves in the SMU nets, while Karasinski had five stops in his first start for the Camels.

Campbell hosts Belmont Saturday (Sept. 1) in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff in its home opener at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
